Saturday night I took in a show by Ringo and his All-Star Band, which may be my only opportunity to see a Beatle perform unless I can catch McCartney sometime in the future. I was expecting a good, fun time, but ended up being pretty blown away by how good this ensemble is.
Who knew Ringo could be such a frontman? Sure, he played drums on the hits done by the others in the band, but for his own songs he was out front, dancing and singing, and engaging with the audience throughout. His voice, I would say, has never sounded better. He played most of his solo hits and most of the Beatle songs that he sang with the band.
The current all-star lineup includes Steve Lukather of Toto on guitar, Todd Rundgren on guitar (and on percussion, along with Ringo, for "Bang on the Drum All Day"), Richard Page (Mr. Mister) on bass, and Greg Rolie on keyboards. Each of these guys gets his turn to play their hits, with Rolie offering up spirited versions of "Black Magic Woman" and "Evil ways", Lukater doing his Toto hits, etc. All of the guys were loose and engaging onstage, and seemed to be having a ball playing together. Rundgren was particularly animated, although his voice was a little rocky.
I was never a Toto fan, though I certainly knew of Lukather's reputation. His playing Saturday blew me away- guy has serious chops, pulling off some very inventive lead stuff throughout. On the Santana tunes, he had Carlo's leads down note-for-note.
Also notable in the lineup is a guy I had not heard of, Warren Ham, a multi-instrumentalist who filled in on various saxes, percussion, and keyboards, as well as providing all the high harmonies. He is apparently an ex-Kansas member in one of its later iterations.
All in all, one of the best concerts in recent memory. The crowd was averaging around age 60, and was into it. Show was sold out at the Seneca Allegeny Casino in Salamanca NY.
So, if Starr is around your locale this summer, I highly recommend catching the show.

Congrats!!
...I have to console myself with memories of the Beatles concert I attended in (I think!) 1964 when they hit Oz for a whirlwind tour.. sigh...

Yeah, well you're now dating yourself, gummy. I would have loved to see the Beatles back when, but in 1964 I was 7 . . .

I was seven too. As kids, we all had Beatle mugs, plates and egg cups. Would probably be worth a few shekels nowadays! I was too young to see them, didn't give it a thought actually and when the 1970s music came along I could have cared less about them. And then I "grew up" and realised just how good they were.

G-Nutz2's U.S. members under the age of about 40 are, right now, busily Googling this to figure out what the h*ll you were talking about.

Yeah... the fact that I was old enough at the time to be playing in band doing Beatles covers is even MORE worrying....

I was gonna say "he's not...." but then I remembered that everything is reversed for people who stand upside down, so yeah, that sounds about right.

So, who was the band covering before the Beatles came along? From memory, and let's face it, that's getting a bit faded these days (daze?).. People like the Everly Brothers, the Dell Shannon-sort-of-stuff, Presley, Cliff Richard & The Shadows, Ventures..... When the 'Liverpool Wave' hit Oz, the setlist also included most of the UK songs that were also in the charts from Gerry & the Pacemakers, Herman's Hermits, Freddie & the Dreamers, etc... ..a year-or so after this, another re-vamped group emerged doing Stones covers and more R&B-styled stuff, which lasted for about a couple of years until it re-invented itself with some new members and we started playing Tamla Motown material in 1968 - 69.. In my hometown we have a 'Classic Hits' AM radio station that plays just about every song I ever covered from about 1962 through 1972...although I do find my voice straining a bit these days to sing along with them, and have been warned by the Financial Controller not to wind the windows down at traffic lights.. So...in reality, to answer your original question Newey, probably about 90% of everything that was in the charts...and here we are now in 2016, having just played a 5-hour gig last Sunday doing Creole, Cajun & Zydeco ...and yes, I turn 68 tomorrow, despite whatever sumgai says...

OK, so some things do change over the years . . . You got a guy with the washboard vest? I've always wanted one of those, then I could truthfully say I had a set of "washboard abs".

We've got that guy alright.. .. and we've got REAL button cajun accordions, fiddle, and seven of us Hewmin Beans... ...been doing this combo for 11 years now as a sideline to a few other things as well.. Music keeps you young..instead of shrinking as we all get older, we are actually getting taller..we know this because all our heads have begun to poke out through the top of our hair...
