A few years back, When I lived in the US, Joan Armatrading was doing some sort of stripped down - read, 'cheap' - world tour, with only her on stage. My wife has always been a fan - I was indifferent. So, we went - but I did go with an open mind. It was, by a country mile, the worst performance I have ever witnessed by a 'celebrated' musician/singer. Even my wife - a fan - was unimpressed. I recently came across something about Armatrading and it sparked this memory. I did a bit of hunting around for a video clip (from the same tour, I think) - the electric guitar playing is certainly as I remember it. It was, apparently, a big thing that 'Joan had gone electric'. Anyway, can anyone beat this example of disappointment - read, 'deep irritation' - with a live gig performance?

Anyway, can anyone beat this example of disappointment - read, 'deep irritation' - with a live gig performance? I wasn't there but I reckon this would have been more disappointing for those present ... Fundamentally different situations though. Both artists are/were talented, but one was screwed up generally and completely out of it on stage. Although I prefer Winehouse as an artist, I would not have sought out attending one of her gigs. If I was at that gig, would I have been very 'irritated', or, more, 'deeply saddened and concerned'? By the reaction of the crowd there (no booing), they seem to generally fell into second group. As for the Armatrading gig: generally, the audience seemed to enjoy it. I could/can not fathom why - except, maybe, her audience are not the most discerning of music fans. Although of course not what she is known for, Armatrading's (electric) guitar playing was unbearable. I just found it unfathomable. And, just checking her Wiki page now, it seems that she had been playing electric guitar for some years. Surely someone should have given her a heads-up. Is her guitar playing there really as bad as I think it is?

Everyone has a bad day. Ask me how I know ... but everyone has a tale to tell. Amy Winehouse had to deal with a crowd singing along to a poignant number in addition to her own demons on the day. Joan is a super songwriter who has been able to rope in top drawer session guys and she's a really underated guitar player too because few expect that from her as a songstress.
I've been to a fair few rubbish gigs in my time, but that is only half the story and I kind of suppress the bad memories! To be in the moment with a great artist is to he able to say you were there. Many folks *claim* to have been "there" with Jimi, but from what I've seen he was a bit messy putting it mildly. Then he would find himself in a scenario where everything clicked, cross all the Tee-s and dot all the I-s and you would be truly happy that you'd persevered and would dine out on it ever after. I can forgive anyone a bad day, not the least Joan.
Perhaps she should have stuck with the Ovation though!
