I couldn't figure it out either but I guessed it was about using dummy coils to assimilate hum cancelling, then I thought that dummy coils have already been covered on here. Fact is GD usually has good reason to post, but I had nothing to contribute so I forgot about it.

Yep. Got that SG. Good point well made.
I recall that this very point has already been discussed back down the thread some way, but when the OP contributes a minor > major in something like post six or seven, hmmm.

I guess "vaping" has to be better than incendiary? I smoked on and off for about 10 years, then I just stopped one day back in 1985. I don't think I smoked enough to call it an addiction so it was really quite easy for me. I used a self developed psychological argument that I kind of kept to myself. One of the best steps that I ever took. I did it for a £5 bet but never got paid because the guy always maintained that I'd start up again. Nope. Freedom. Cyn, this is a great step you've taken. I'm not going to get all evangelical like quitters seem to do, but I would personally be very pleased to learn that for you it's a step on the way to knocking it on the head completely, as in getting shot of vaping too. Once you are free, you'll see just how silly it all looks. Difficult I know, but let it go Bro'.

Boy I love it when I read "stuff" that isn't just cut'n'pasted from Wikipedia. I would just add that we remember that a variac is an auto transformer and as such provides no DC isolation. Great for reforming capacitors but to be used with caution.

I use two forks (taken from the table, not the back yard!) That gives an even leverage both sides and I've yet to see any cured finish damaged by that method.
Edit: if you have a "push-push" switched potentiometer, do remember to release the switch before removing any splined knob.

The Kinks "Sunny Afternoon".
Goes from dm to D as it moves from each verse to chorus.
OK, doesn't comply with the major /minor as a relative minor thing, but I reckon most of my contributions fall at that hurdle.

That's a neat project and well finished (measured by my standards!) I really like the headstock shape- it's very difficult to come up with something that is different and visually appealing but still ergonomic. My only slight reserve is that the body looks too large, but this is a subjective response and I cannot remember what the Breadwinners looked like. I have a Firebird (2007) and it sounds great, even though the ceramic pickups are not that highly thought of. Mine sound good enough not to mess around swapping out chasing the dragon of *tone*. Given the recent perceived dive in output quality from Gibson (groundhog day- corner cutting etc) I would not be at all surprised if I discovered that mine are Chinese too.

It looks like a potted inductor, possibly two cores stacked? Didn't Nighthawks have some kind of Varitone fitted? (Maybe not every Nighthawk). The way the connections are described as being instead of the pickup at the switch tag, it's not really surprising if the neck pup is mute. Is there one or more seemingly redundant capacitors anywhere? With some intuitive re-wiring, the neck pup should sing once more and the inductor could probably be put to better use. Like newey- I'm only guessing...

That's because the battery lasts for years, but when it's dead- it's gone. That would not stop the likes of us though would it? Sadly, as good as an AVO 8 is, a 5 dollar DVM won't load a circuit under test in the same way because of the very much higher ohms per volt rating. As with all things having a digital read out, numbers of digits on the display should not be taken as an indicator of high(er) accuracy. Best not to confuse resolution with accuracy. I purchased one of these little multi testers on eBay: m.ebay.co.uk/itm/2016-Transistor-Tester-TFT-Diode-Triode-Capacitance-Meter-LCR-ESR-NPN-PNP-MOSFET-/272671833854?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVEIt came from China and they can be purchased for less outlay now. I bought one ready installed in a plastic case with an LCD read out like the one in the link.It has a Li-Ion rechargeable and a ZIF socket. I have been amazed by what it does. Stick a transistor in and it identifies PNP or NPN and tells you which leg is which! I haven't checked the accuracy, but have had great fun measuring audio output transformers and other inductors like pick ups! It even has an IR decoder! You can purchase just the populated PCB, but I have too many unfinished projects laying around. e&oe...

You mean an AVO 8 John? You can bang a nail in with one (well not literally!). I have two. Well actually, one is the mil-spec variant known as Multi Meter Mk. 1 but it's the same beast in an additional metal casing.
Remember that they are only 20K per volt which is OK under most circumstances but you do need to be aware of the circuit being loaded occasionally and make appropriate allowance(s).
It's a shame you're down under because otherwise I'd sort you the non mil-spec one I have. (I'd have to find the wee beasty too- easier said than done!)
Finally, don't forget that weird 15 volt battery...bet you can buy them anywhere? maybe not such a great idea after all?

We can't see the back of the guitar. Clearly the rout doesn't go straight through because otherwise the bridge would indeed be floating! However there could be some switching or a even bug hutch cover. After all, right now we're assuming too much. It's a demo / mock up axe so I don't figure it's that fancy, just a utility job for comparison purposes. What is that blurry chromed blob? I can't make it out.

We went through this before with the prevalence of ascetic keyboard tunes assailing our cab doors back in the 1980s. The demise of guitar oriented music was widely proclaimed and then what do you know- along came Seattle to rescue us and renew our collective six-stringed love affair. Plus ça change- plus c'est la même chose n'est ce pas?
What with people seemingly prepared to pay a premium for the benefit of the excercise they get from jumping up to flip vinyl, a return if not to the heady days but at least sustainable guitar sales seems inevitable to me. It only needs for the manufacturers to come to terms with the conservative nature of six string stranglers. (We don't like change- well change at a premium price, present company excluded of course?) Tub thumpers are not so afflicted, but you can't compare the two because they enjoy measurably different volumes of production.
The other issue touched upon in that article (which I'd read before) is pricing. Just like vinyl, this is set at what the seller thinks the market will withstand, and has no bearing on fair pricing. Address this and you have a partial fix. Unfortunately that offers no short term solution for the big boys' cash flow situation.
And what's all that about shooting a Strat to bits at a corporate bonding event? Oh come on Henry J / Gibson.

@gd, make a little jig from a piece of extruded or formed angle (aluminium?) with a suitable hole drilled in it. That way you only need to mark the positions with a non-permanent marker. The lacquering or refinishing is the real deal breaker as the OP has noted. I used cubic zirconia for the side dot markers on a Warmoth Tele neck a-la Danny Gatton. You can get the CZ stones on the 'Bay for 3 or 4 euros and the effect is great, especially in low stage lighting because they catch available light and glint.

If you can get a counter bore / spot face cutter, you could lift the finish locally and specifically from above the markers. You can grind down an ordinary HSS drill if you're up to it...You would need those holes as a guide for the lead on the counter bore, and I would do it by hand, not in a drill, because I used a very high quality German cutter to remove the finish for Telecaster string ferrules-using a bench press / radial drill-and it still ended in tears on a gold sparkle paint job.

I haven't checked recently but Warmoth did not do a nitro option back when I purchased two necks from them. I imagine this neck you have bought was from a ready finished selection of necks because otherwise am left wondering why you didn't specify the correct dots? I specified such dot markers on my Strat neck (for an upcharge). No assistance that I can offer I'm afraid, but newey is correct that someone on here will be able to offer some sound advice.

Guys I acknowledge the responses, but I operate almost completely from various Android platform devices using the Proboards app and some of the available functionality is missing in relation to (but not restricted to) the issue at hand. I rarely boot up a desktop (unless it's to watch a movie) these days. I gather that I'm not alone in this? Whatever, uploading images to (eg) Photobucket is a pain on my mobile devices.
The bottom line in all this is that there is no free lunch. Instead of placing trust in various "dot.com" startups that eventually discover the sums don't add up, perhaps we should think about how we secure things for posterity, even if it does incur a charge. I don't know about the logistics of getting images up on The Forum, but it seems to me that "The Big G". storage has a much greater chance of riding out financial stress than the these fly-by-nights. I'm anticipating that "Postimage" will be next organisation to falter in the bow wave of ad blockers...
On another forum, I offered to assist with costs to hold back the advertising and the owner declined stating that it was his responsibility, so I paid the fee for one month only to discover that could only be applied by an admin. Cheers for that one Proboards!
