Tarnation but I almost spaced it again. Gotta get a better grip. So this is an example of how to mix Old School with New School, Japanese style. This thing starts out most of the way through because I want to highlight the shamisen player. Then I suggest you go back and listen to the whole piece, it's a work of art. The group itself has been around for at least 10 years, with few changes in the lineup, so they're pretty polished. Still, this lady stands out, at least to me. I mean, Hell's Bells, she's in her late 30's, and still going at it full bore! Yes this does throw out the desire to have a "Rock 'n Roll Free Sunday", as this is Japan, after all. Like Babymetal, they bring in almost everything, both in instruments and in influences. About once a week I drift on over to YouTube and pull them up. I think at least a few of you will agree, they're pretty bleepin' good. sumgai

Speaking of songs with unexpected instrumentation...
You know, I just can't recall anyone playing So What on bass and rubber pig...

Offbeat instrumentation? Anyone remember Pianosaurus with their toy instruments?

Seems like all sorts of interesting things coming out of Scandinavia, from straight-up Death Metal to this . . . I suppose the long winters give 'em plenty of time to dream this sort of thing up and practice it to boot.
I always liked that intro riff from "Thunderstruck" (and saw Angus do it live in about 1991 or so). It sounds a lot harder to play than it actually is, there's a lot of open strings in there and it's mostly on one string. But on a banjo, who knows? (although I was suspecting an alternate tuning on the banjo from a first listen).

Gotta add in Canada's own Luther Wright and the Wrongs here, who covered the entire double album of The Wall song-for-song (and largely note for note) in a C & W style. This is one track, but if you haven't heard it, the whole thing is well worth a listen. They range through about every Country style there is, from straight-up bluegrass, to twangy Nashville to western swing and back again.

Put yer coat back on, newbie, 'cause we're going from stand-up dulcimer to Korean gayageum:
Hey, wait! Just because I chose my favorite genre, that doesn't mean that she can't do other stuff:
And if you think this lady's got no soul, try this on for size:
She just plain rips it up, all across the musical spectrum.

The glissando in "Pipeline" she does is amazing. Great stuff!
