My kid sister (now age 56, but still a kid to me . . .) roped me into participating in this thing called "Music League". SHe's been running a league since the start of the pandemic, but this year is the first time i'm in it.
"Music League" is a free app that one downloads, and it works with Spotify to provide the songs (you don't need to have the paid version of Spotify, either). The way this works, the "season" is broken into a number of rounds of play (we have 11, but the number of rounds can vary). Each week, there is a theme, and the players chose a song they think will both fit the theme as well as garner the most votes from the other players. After everyone has submitted their song for that round (there are deadlines to do so), each player listens to all the songs on that week's playlist and votes. There are a possible 10 upvotes available and 3 downvotes, called "poops"; the votes can be split and distributed among as many of the songs as one desires. Voting is blind, so who submitted which song is not revealed until the voting is over, and one cannot vote for the song they submitted themselves.
As an example, our theme last week was "NSFW", with everyone submitting a song that would get them fired if the boss happened to walk by while it was playing. Needless to say, raunchiness abounded . . .
In addition to the voting, there is also commentary on the others' song choices, often snarky but good-natured, so there's a lot of back and forth after the voting is in. Each week's winner gets to pick the theme for the following round. The Admin of the League (my sister) also keeps a spreadsheet of the songs that have been previously used, as well as the themes previously used; any duplication will guarantee downvotes from all.
So, this is not a plug or anything, just something that's a bit of a lark for music lovers. I'm having fun although I'm getting creamed in the standings currently; as the older member of the group, my choices apparently aren't resonating with the "hip-hop generation". I'm working on a comeback in the next few rounds . . .
And, it does force one to listen to music and bands that I otherwise would not have experienced. So, it's expanding the horizons a bit.
I'll see how this plays out, but perhaps if there is enough interest we could start our own League hereabouts in the future. However, 10 to 12 players is about the upper limit that will work for this; more than that and the playlist becomes too long.
