Hi, I need to reverse the overall phase of a SM humbucker but retain the north coil as active for split coil selection. Is it OK to connect the two coils via their ‘start’ wires as opposed to the ‘finish’ wires as suggested by SD? i.e. red and white for the hot and earth with black and green connected. Black and green then connected to earth for coil split so keeping the north coil active… My limited logic suggests yes… I couldn’t attach their wiring diagram but here is the web link: www.seymourduncan.com/blog/latest-updates/humbucker-wire-color-translationMany thanks in advance…

Hello Vmax,
Yes - I think your plan to reverse the phase of your pickup should work, provided that the south start (green wire) is not tied internally, to the outer shield of the pickup.

Is it OK to connect the two coils via their ‘start’ wires as opposed to the ‘finish’ wires as suggested by SD? Yes, but you haven't reversed the phase by doing so. All you've done is "restacked the coils", as our member ashcatlt calls it. Member wolf calls it wiring the HB "inside out". But, wired this way, the HB will still be in phase with a SD HB wired as per the usual practice, with the green to ground, black to output. There are certain schemes where one needs to wire a HB "inside out", but you do not have to do so simply in order to select the opposite coil of the HB; you can simply connect the red/white pair to output instead of to ground. But either you mis-wrote there, or some confusion exists, because the North coil (the slug coil) of a SD HB is the black/white pair. Ground the red/white pair with the HB wired as per normal SD practice and you'll have the North coil as the active one.

Thank you Newey for your answer. I did rewire the pick-up ‘inside out’ (love that description!) and then connected the red and white wires to hot and earth so as to be in phase with the other Bare Knuckles. It works as expected.
