Just found these ladies, but that's only because I've been playing AWOL from YouTube for the last few whiles.... They're all classically trained, but their first love is rock 'n' roll. One could find worse ways to spend their time. sumgai

Ya, 'tis pretty nice.. but I'm guessing not so unusual 'these days'...
Sure, people like Emerson, Lake and Palmer did it the other way 'round ('Pictures at an Exhibition' and 'Fanfare for the Common Man') for example...
...but I think 'brought-up on classical music playing rock/pop' might've 'started mainstream' in the '80s or so... with 'our' fella, Martin Lass (an American bloke who grew up and performed initially here in Oz)... together with Nigel Kennedy (from the UK), they sortof brought the solo violinist from the orchestra onto 'popular television' (or something like that).
O'course, the 'harder rock' thing might've started with 'Jerry C' and his "Canon Rock" in 2006 or so (although, I think the treatment is a bit long, really):-
I like Sungha Jung's versions, both 'originally-styled' ...
...and the newer, more 'traditional', jazzier version:
As always, YMMV...
Edit: Removed video examples owing to licensing issues with videos... again...
