Pickup routing with Phase Reversal in a Stereo wired guitar

Hey Everyone,

First post here on this fine forum.

My buddy has stereo wiring on a guitar with a phasing issues. He can't solder so I volunteered to help.

Guitar sounds great with balanced output in a stereo setting.

However, we are getting an out of phase tone when both pickups are switched on in mono. Pickups are wired to individual mini toggles with stacked pots.

Do you think this can be easily remedied?

Hello and Welcome to G-Nutz2!

I don't have any good answers off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone will be along.

Has the guitar been rewired or modified in the past, or is it as it was from the factory? Was it working at one point, and then something changed?

Also, there are several different ways of wiring a guitar for stereo output. We're probably going to need a diagram of the guitar's current wiring. But we'll try to get you at least pointed in a likely direction.

I'll make the opposite assumption that newey just made - I'm thinking that you stated only one question, so everything else is working as expected... is that correct?

If so, then your problem is simply a pickup hooked up backwards to the normal manner, which is easily corrected. Simply reverse the two pickup wires where one goes to the on/off switch, and the other goes to ground. This can be done on either pickup, it makes no difference which you choose to operate on. Give that a try and see what happens.


Now..... all of that was assuming that you have a bare minimum of pickup selection options - Neck, Both, or Bridge. However, if you also have single-coil options, or series options, then while my advice above might still work, it's more than likely that we'll have to back up and take "The newey Approach", i.e. publish an as-built diagram, to use as a starting point.

BTW, does the guitar hum at all when both switches are off?  We can help you fix that as well.
