Hey, everyone... first post here. I recently purchased a body, neck, guts, etc. to build a Telecaster. The Control switch, POTs, etc were pre-wired like the Highway 1 Series Telecaster. Link here: www.fender.com/support/diagrams/pdf_temp1/telecaster/0111200_02A/SD0111200_02APg2.pdfI've shielded the cavities of the guitar, and I've soldered the "BLACK WIRE FROM VOLUME POT MOUNTED TO PAINT DOT(BODY)" in the diagram to the copper shielding tape. Yet, I still get a hum from the guitar when it's plugged in. The hum gets stronger when I touch the control plate, and it completely disappears when I touch the patch cord. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the constant hum? ? I'm thinking maybe I messed up the grounding or something. I've double checked all my wires and they're hooked up according to the diagram.

Very strange, because the control plate is grounded, as is the outer case of the plug of the guitar cord. So touching either should do the same thing, or nothing. Something wrong with grounding for sure

This guitar will sound beautiful if I could just get rid of this hum. I've tried a few different things, but to no cigar. I'm using a cup for the input jack... maybe I should switch to a jack with a plate that screws into the body? Or would that do anything?

I reckon its something more basic. What happens if you clip a wire between the control plate and guitar cord outer sleeve, without touching them yourself?

Cup or plate jack should be the same.
Try measuring how many ohms between the patch cord's metal shell and the control plate. Should be zero ohms.
Also between the patch cord and the copper shielding tape. Should be zero.

I ran a wire from the input jack to the control plate and the guitar didn't pick up any sound. I'll try running it from the shielding to the input jack next.

A ha!!! I'm resoldered the two inputjack wires this time putting the black ground wire on the other sleeve and vice versa for the white.
And now it's gone!
This is my first time building a guitar... heck... even installing pickups and I've learned tonnes. Once I get better at this I look forward to helping others, too. Thanks again for the touble shooting, guys.
