I've been reading some old threads here, and finding some very interesting stuff! ;D
But my intent is not to re-hash old topics (water under the bridge and all that), but to pose a question..... what do you suppose has happened to so many of the 570 members who have signed up over that past year and more, and then disappeared into the night?
Dissatisfied with the answers they got? A few. Personality conflicts? One or two more. No time left for the hobby? More than a few, but not many. Lost interest in the hobby? Not quite as many as the 'no time left' crowd, but still a few. and last but not least: Lost interest in this particular forum? Apparently, a lot.
Before I say anthing more, I wanna know, am I barking up the wrong horse here? Am I flogging a dead tree that no one cares about? I mean, this place has potential, doesn't it?
Anybody got any opinions on this?

I can only comment for myself as a new member.
I must confess that I do have a habit of joining boards just to get an answer to a question and once it is answered rarely go back. The sites that I do go back to are either one's that are about subjects I keep getting questions about and have a very active interest in (of which there are about 3 or 4 forums) or one's where the community spirit keeps you involved and you can actually get known to the other members (i.e. there aren't so many active members that your voice is drowned out).
I was given a good welcome which, in itself, goes a long way to satisfying the second category of sites I go back to - as for the first category I have yet to see how active an interest this is going to become for me. I am still very much a newcomer to the hobby. Having had great success with my first mod and being thoroughly chuffed with the outcome I daresay this will be an ongoing hobby of mine though.
As for barking at a dead, wrong tree-horse that you are flogging I wouldn't say so. Hey - I've posted a few times more than I post to most sites already! (I'm sure you'll forgive my honesty).

Hey; i guess ill chime in on this one. One thing i like about this site, and i believe it is inherent with a hobby like this, is that everyone is very gung-ho about this hobby(and career, i am assuming for some people).
In my opinion it is kinda nice to have a smalller community because, like dedidio says, you can get to know everyone, and actually have your questions answered.
I know i joined this board to get a simple question answered, and when i recieved such a quick and in-depth response i figured i'd stick around and explore a bit. What i found was a community that cared about their hobby, and was interested in sharing their knowledge with noobies like me!
I like the small size here, and I think it helps in concentrating the amount of useable information.

"got their answers and went away" accounts for a very large group, and that's pretty much expected.
there are several members who pop in every week or two.
some guys go away for a month or two at a time and when the come back, they post prodigiously.
the sixty-four dollar question here is:
why have 200 members signed up, but never posted once?

unk, That was going to be my very next question! I just didn't want to spew it all out there at once, I thought I'd let slip just a thought or two, and see where that leads. So far, so good, let's keep it rolling here, folks. More opinions, please. sumgai

I'm gonna throw another hat into the ring:
RandomHero, I know you're monitoring this topic, and I now apologize in advance for not bringing this to you in the appropriate forum (Suggestion Box), or via PM. However, as an old fart, I am highly justified in saying that some folks have a difficult time reading some of these posts - the quotes in particular are too d@mned small! I can do it, but it's not nearly as easy as reading the regular text. So I postulate that some modders who are retired and have the time, money and desire are turned off by the strain of trying to read some of our jewels of wisdom. They then see no reason to stick around, and poof!, gone with the wind.
Can this problem be remedied? (The size thing, not the wind thing. ;D)

Well Im registered on about four guitar forums, but this is the only one I check out most days. Its because it has become a real community, so its kind of like dropping into a favorite watering hole on the way home, to see whos there and whats happening. Theres bound to be alot who just come for one answer, or just to look. I think that is OK, as long as no one takes Unklmickeys favorite beer glass.
There is one member I was wondering about. Stratlover was by far the most prolific poster from the start of the forum, up until about last May, and then no posts. I hope he is OK.

I think every forum has this same problem. People seem to sign up, get the info they require at that time, then leave. I created a DVD of a guitar clinic I filmed involving Brett Garsed (aussie guitarist) and a when word got around that myself and one other guy was sending free copies out to forum members we had a heap of people join, ask for their copy then never post again.
Maybe some people just join for schematics, search the posts for info or sit back and just read posts but don't reply because they aren't experienced enough to answer people's questions.

...Maybe some people just join for schematics, search the posts for info or sit back and just read posts but don't reply because they aren't experienced enough to answer people's questions.... thanks Shane, that's sorta ironic, cause visitors can read the same posts and schematics we can. they just can't post. so if someone joined just to get the extras, but didn't want to post, well the jokes on them. there are no extras. but maybe there should be. like maybe an "inner circle" that only members of a certain status can view and post to. and as far as not having enough experience to answer a question, Shane, those folks should have realized by now, that's not a requirement. i've offered opinions in lots of areas that i'm clueless in. i'm usually careful to mention the fact that i'm just guessing. so, i'm gonna guess that many DID join for the "extras". Known a lot of guitarists, but few who had a clue about what all those Little thangs are underneath the pickguard. I have seen guitarists really hack up instruments chasing some vague ideas. Millions of guitarists, 100,000ths of guitarist who want something different in their axe, a handful who know what's going on in the gut of these things. Curious minds meet Google --- Welcome to GN1 and 2. These guys are mostly looking for answers and are trying to harvest info on their fantasy mod. Then they are outta there. That's how I found it. RW's cosmological theorem One: while many cosmologists postulate a single center of the universe, there are in fact multiple centers of the universe, mathematically equivalent to the number of humans alive at any singular point of measure. This board is a stumble across an unlikely little oasis. Thoughtful, smart, clever, creative, resourceful, and smart@ssed enthusiasts. So there is a core here who love the hobby, and bore the people in their real life to tears, and come here because there are not many in this little internet church. The lurkers .... lurk. Always have, always will. Unlike some of the serial boardists, I really have not been this engaged in these type of boards before and am a little surprised at my immersion. Even more surprised anyone reads my posts. It is kinda addictive. How far can I go? ... There is a rare comraderie here that I treasure. I like that the core guys are resplendent with personality and may not be persuaded from expressing it. Sardonic, caring, erudite, opinionated, sporadically courteous, word riffers, egotistic. It's a fun mix. A lot of testing, a lot of respect among this small, faceless community. Have you ever wondered what all these coots look like? Not many 20 year olds in the core. And would their visage match their board personality. And are their lenses wide-angled enough to capture these countenances? I glanced over the fact that we bore those around us with these topics, but really, where do we have an outlet for this stuff rattling around in our heads, or anyone with the patience to listen and interact, much less actually collaboratively create? So the board membership, given the narrow focus, probably exactly gets the level of participation expected. Core group, interlopers, mass of lurkers, and see-yas. Sounds like life. We are the Secret handshake Freemasons of the guitar modders world. I can not believe how much I have learned here, and someday I will act like it. I thank each of you, even when you are wrong, and thoroughly convinced of your absoluteness. RW

I am a busy guy to say the least. I do however try and look at the board every few days or so. This is a wonderful place!...Guys who flutter in once or twice and are never to be heard of again are missing out on alot of great information, great advice and yes, even a few laughs. I dont want to leave anyone out, but guys like Unk & Randomhero ( there are many more ) are fellas who know what they are talking about and we here at GN2 are lucky to have them. If for some reason this board was in trouble and needed donations...count me in. I have been playing guitar for almost 30 years. Im a pick it up and play kind of guy. But I must say that the info I have attained in this forum has boggled my mind. All of the possibilities, the tweaking, the setups, trying this and that. WOW! I am a member of no other boards. I do not need to be. Great work guys!!

I love it here, I lurk here constantly.
Mr. Atchley's site saved my '87 MIJ from the junkheap-however,
I can be of little help if you want to put P 90's in your Strat.

it's been a little more than 2 weeks since Doug posted on the boards.
that might not seem like much time, but he isn't usually gone so long.
i hope he isn't too busy trying to keep his feet dry, up there in Maine.
