Well ive just refurbished an old knackered Jap fender of mine, ive done minor repairs before but this was my first complete refret and neck respray. Its a maple neck and after sanding the old laquer off and straightening the neck i successfully refretted the neck and sealed the wood using shellac sanding sealer, and finally laquered the whole thing using an acrylic based laquer (Halfords clear laquer). No problems there. But, After it dried (nearly a week) i began wet sanding to cut back before rubbing and polishing. But a major problem has started, the laquer is simply peeeling off the fretboard, i scored the fret sides to prevent this but it still happens. My question to the experienced folk out there is, what is causing this. Is it an incompatibility problem with the shellac, grease perhaps between the layers (though i barely handled it) or is it simply that the laquer needs more drying time, tho as it dries more and shrinks im sure the peeling would be more of a problem. I'd also like to know if as a compromise i can use the shellac alone as a finish from the neck, it buffs up well but will it be hard enough once its being played. Many thx for any help, advice needed asap.

I can't speak for Halford's,but most acrylic"which I have used" isn't near as hard after drying as nitro based. You might have a incompatablity problem,I would try doing what you did"spraying in the order that you did"on a clean scrap piece of wood and see if you get the same results. If you do you have a incomp. problem.
