Hey gang... I'm trying to make a box, something like this one: Except, mine will not look/work as good! I have the fretboard blanks (pre-cut for frets). I have some frets, even... but I've been looking at fret markers to use... One choice is a round marker (like above, in both black and white - I have both maple and rosewood fretboards...) that has a diameter of 0.241 inches. My question is, what size drill bit would I use to make the hole(s)? I'm thinking maybe a 1/4" would be right (and then fill with dust and glue), because even a 15/64" would be too small...? Or should I drill small, and them ream it out with something (but with what?) Any ideas?

use calipers and a compass to outline the hole
drill a slightly smaller hole, with the same center as the outline
use a dremel expand the hole to your outline

quarry, Ya know what I'd do? I"d bust on down the local home-improvement warehouse/box store, and buy me a very cheap ¼" drill bit. Then I'd chuck it up in the drill motor, and set the motor for reverse operation. I'd turn the drill bit at half of full speed, and hold a piece of emery cloth around the cutting surfaces. In this manner, you'll eventually reduce the actual diameter of the drill bit evenly. With emery cloth, it'll take some time, but you don't wanna go too far too fast anyways. Still, if time seems to be dragging on, simply use a fine mill bastard file for the first few moments, then clean it up as above. But for only 9 thousandths of an inch, the total effort won't take much time, I'm sure. Keep checking every half-minute to minute to be sure you've not gone too far. Simple set the motor rotation to normal, and punch a hole in a piece of scrap wood, and test with your 0.241" inlay material. HTH BTW, nice idea for a quicky project! sumgai

Ooooh... I like that idea! Simple and easy. And since I have enough fretboard stock to do several boxes, I will probably have the need to drill several holes.
Thanks, Sum! ;D

quarry, Be sure to mark this modified drill bit in some way! You don't wanna pick it outta your tool box next month, thinking that you're gonna mount a ¼" dowel rod, only to find that you now need to chuck up said dowel rod and shave it down a skosh. The very fact that I'm just now remembering this tip should be an indicator of what I failed to do in the dim past. ;D sumgai

why would anyone want properly mounted fret markers on a little wooden box?!?!? I mean no offence, really, but i just can't fathom what you'd want it for...
