I thought I'd share this repair anecdote with this wonderful community!! I was working on a brand new Squier Bass recently and the customer was complaining of a buzz when the E string was played open! Easy, I hear everybody cry. I'll have that fixed in a second, right? Yes, well thats exectly what I thought! First things first, I checked all the usual culprits. Nut height and action. They were fine. Maybe it's a dodgy string. Changed the string. Still the same problem. Aha! Maybe it's a loose machine head or bushing. No. Maybe it's a loose truss rod nut. No. Maybe there's something resonating at the bridge. No. Ok, maybe the nut slot is not cut right. I filled the slot and recut it. No, still there!! I then removed the nut, made sure the base was flat and true fitting, and reglued it. No! Maybe there's something vibrating inside the control cavity. No!No matter how hard or light I played the string, it made a strange ghostly buzzing sound on the open. Stuff it, I'll change the string again. And to my amazement, the problem was gone!! I spent over an hour trying to work out what the hell was wrong with my customers Bass Guitar. It was driving me mad by the end. Imagine how frustrated and annoyed I was, when I discovered it was a faulty string. A 2nd faulty string. And the moral of the story is, next time you change a string and the problem doesn't go away, make sure you change it again......just incase!
