Cutting lacqure on a sunbust guitar

Hi all as some of you know I am going to convert a sunburst P & J bass to a P & MM bass.
What I was wondering when I go to make the j cavity bigger I have to be able to get rid of the top laquire where the MM pickup goes any ideas Ie sharp stanley knife .
Other wise the top layer will chick etc when I go to route out he cavity

maybe if you clamp a thin bit of wood tightly directly over where you are routing.

keep the rpms up and the blade sharp. also go slow. very slow.
