... ok not quite the first step, but the first step after buying the wood. I have two bits of wood ready to be glued together to make a blank. What type of glue is best? I cant imagine elmers wood glue being the go to stuff...
how long should i leave the clamps on?

If its wood glue/ carpenters glue chances are its gonna work! It should say on the bottle how long it takes to dry to full strength. Id recommend leaving it clamped at the very least overnight.

kuzi, ranch is right, it should work. However...... Carpenter's glue (it's yellow, not white) is probably the better stuff for this job. I'm not fond of the new generation that purports to set up quickly, the cyroaclynates, the epoxies, and the rest of the new stuff. As far as I'm concerned, if it's so good that it can adhere metal, glass, cloth, leather and wood all at the same time, then there's gotta be a trade-off somewhere, and I'm not willing to be the guinea pig to find out what that might be. Clamp it at least 24 hours, but if you go for longer, that's even better. And the Number One wood butcher's maxim is "You can never have too many clamps!" ;D HTH sumgai

i have 6 clamps right now.... im gunna get 10 or so more.
how do i keep the clamps from maring the wood? just slip another little bit of wood between the wood and the clamp? can i use these other pieces to make sure the two body blank pieces line up and are flush?
ive never really done this before so any tips/tricks would help

kuzi,
Rather than describe how to glue-and-clamp pieces of wood together, let me ask you to take a google on that topic. There are more pictures posted on that than Carter has Little Liver Pills. ;D
I'd enter the following search terms into your preferred search engine:
wood glue OR bond clamp
Good Luck!

kuzi,
as far as glue, I use Tite-Bond. Its what i have used on my fretboard and it works great. ive also used it on a stand that holds 11 guitars. Not quite the same application, but it works none the less. clamps, i would use wood shims in order to not mar the body. of course, if there is enough clearance, then you will end up sanding/ cutting off any mars that are on there anyways. Im with sg as far as you can never have too many clamps. also, one thing to remember when glueing is put glue on one piece. if you put it on both, then the glue will end up getting squeezed out anyways.... then put them a bit staggared and slide them into place. this will get a nice even ammount of glue across the entire surface.
just my three cents ;D
