Hope someone can off me some advice! I have recently purchased a Gretsch Duo Jet, But the E & A strings a extremely muddy or bassy! I am thinking possibley I have to shave some off the top of the nut, as the strings are well below the top of the nut, it's my understanding that the strings should sit only be half the diameter of the string, into the slot! Anyway I would appreciate any assistance the forum can offer...Thanks Bill

Have you tried lowering the pickups on the bass side?

I wouldn't worry about the depth of the nut slots higher than the widest point of the strings. If the action above the frets is good and the tone clear (no buzzing), I might wait to do the trimming, especially if you are unable to solve the muddy sound and want to return the guitar.
