Hey guys,
I had a guy come and try out for a guitar spot in my band yesterday. He was playing a G&L ASAT Semi Hollowbody.
This guitar had the G&L rectangular Single Coils. I wanted to see if anyone knew what the difference is compared to regular single coils? Are they a lot like P-90's?

It depends which one he had, if he had this one, it's obvious to see the advantages over a traditional SC pup (no matter what the shape). mmmmMMMMmmm.....G&L goooood (but $$$). Oh....Here is the standard ASAT pup. per G&L The patented G&L Magnetic Field Design® pickups use a ceramic bar magnet installed underneath each coil, with soft iron adjustable pole pieces to transfer the magnetic field to the top of the pickup. By contrast, traditional Alnico type pickups, such as used in the Legacy and George Fullerton models, use non-adjustable Alnico pole pieces leaving the only adjustment being pickup height. The Magnetic Field Design has this adjustment, but further offers individual adjustment of each pole piece, letting the player effectively adjust the output of each string on each pickup. Magnetic Field Design yield about twice the output per wind, making the pickup quieter while allowing a greater overall output. The sound of Magnetic Field pickups is slightly warmer with a broader frequency response.

ux, thanks for the quick response. i do believe that is it.(unless they have a similar looking SC but is actually different.) all i know is that his tele sounded amazing. and he got it for free. as you stated, G&Ls are pricey. i was in a shop that was having a going out of business sale about a year ago. I picked up a G&L strat. They were asking about $700 for it. I was going to put it on my credit card(eek!), and pay it off ASAP. Then one of the workers there made a comment to me about testing guitars i couldnt afford. he lost a sale that day. Also, my buddies dad has a limited edition G&L strat. He was Special Forces for the US army in the late '80s to early '90s and stationed in panama. he got it for $500. two or so weeks later Leo Fender died. The value of that baby skyrocketed..... Tyler

I had a G&L Bass on backorder from a local music shop back in 1989 for $425!!! After waiting over 9 months for it to come in, I canceled the order in late 1990 ...especially stupid on my part because the shop offered to pop for the active electronics version if I would wait another two months. I should have waited. duh....
I do still have the Bass I substituted for it though, a Fender JP-90
