i haven't tried them. i have talked to some folks that have.
if you have a pair (or quad) of full stacks, you don't need 'em.
even if you don't already have HF hearing loss, there are 16 (32) speakers, so you will never be directly in line with more than a few of them.
on a half-stack, or single speaker, my friends who play 'loud and mean' like them. (the homebrew soft ones.)
i would guess if you make your own, they should either be very soft, or rigid and damped.
if they resonate, that would create a whole 'nuther problem.
i'm guessing aluminum dust caps would make them almost mandatory.

Thats interesting!...I have noticed guitarists using tape over the middle of the speaker but thought nothing of it.
When im noodling here at home I have to turn the amp away from me because of that piercing " Ice Pick" effect...
I may not have to do that anymore...

Yes - I used to wonder why so many guitarists had to repair a tear in their speaker cloth, all in just the same place.
Ive taped a 4" cardboard circle in front of my 1x12 DSL. A nice low impact mod. It reduces the treble-beam effect, but, it is still somewhat there. I might try a larger one. At the every least, it adds a bit of enigmatic mojo to a rather clean looking amp.
