takamine or ibanez, thats what I know (and like).. and if it's $1000, you could even probably get two 12-string gutars !!

Used Vintage Guild(pre-Fender) you can find them all day long for around $900, and they will be better than anything you can get new in the price range.

does anyone know what 12-string was used form the original Hotel California recording? Every guitar in that song is toned to perfection

You can find some nice Ricks on ebay for less than 1000 bucks.
I was looking but I cant find out what guitar was used on Hotel California. I'm gonna guess it was a Rick or a Fender.
I've heard many good things about Fender's 12 string Strat. It's 700 bucks on musicians friend, plus its a strat so most of the mods on this site are designed around it.
Dean and Schecter both make sub-$750 guitars which go for around 350-500 on the internet. I'm sure they are worth a second look.

VonFrenchie... I heard that the 12 string on Hotel California was played through a Leslie speaker. Any scoop?

For how much song coverage do you need it? For electric sounds, I cover the Ric sounds thru my Variax. I have the original model with a Workbench ($99 street) where I can build and download virtual guitar models into the Variax. I've seen the newer Model 300 for perhaps $333 or so new at GC. For my minimal use, the stock Ric patches that come with the Variax are fine, as are the patches for acoustic 12 strings. www.line6.com

Takamine 12-string was used by Dave Gilmour between 1987 & 1989 while on tour, so if he played one it must be good.

I have seen the odd Sigma (Martin entry level) advertised for sale here and there.
I even played one recently - I don't own a 12 string and so I am no expert on them, but to my ear it sounded pretty good.
Have you considered Yamaha?
They are commonly available, inexpensively, and - while I have not played a 12 string - I have a late '70s FG-160 which sounds really good. Fantastic if you factor in the low price.
I would expect to pay $300 plus? for either one.
A friend of mine also told me about a guitar called "Flambeau".
He is a professional guitarist and said if I can get my hands on one of these rare gems, either buy it or let him know about it so he can buy it.

Look for Mitchell at your local GC. They make a 12-string dreadnought model for $199. I know that sounds a little cheap, but this thing is amazing for the money; they list at twice that. The tuners are sealed, and pretty good, it's a solid spruce top, and the intonation seems to be right. It's even got some nice cosmetic touches.
Worth a try. I bought one.
