Hi peeps, Well.....I took the plunge! I have wanted a double neck for about 18 years and when I seen one on ebay I was sucked right in! Being a lefty doesn't help because double neck lefties are pretty hard to come by. Anyway, I found this Double Neck SG copy on ebay and, regretably without too much thought, decided to buy it. My first and probably only thought at the time was "if the body and neck are OK, I can always replace p'ups and other hardware." I had a quick look at the seller's feedback and for the most part it was good. The seller was answering my questions about postage etc very promptly, that is until I bought the item! He told me he would ship out the next working day after he received payment (Paypal), which was last Wednesday morning (Tuesday afternoon his time, US). I have emailed him numerous times since then and he sent me an email this morning informing me of a USPS tracking number which, after searching on the USPS site, does not exist! I guess it may not have entered the database yet if it was only recently posted but I still worry because I have never bought from overseas before. I will give a review on it if it turns up, otherwise I will probably come back and whinge about losing $800au!!

Nightowl...I had an SG replica doubleneck years ago. A Starfield if my memory serves me correctly. It was nice and got loads of compliments. A bit too heavy and not very practical. But hey, who says rock n roll should be practical! As far as e-bay goes, dont worry youre covered. Paypal is excellent and youll get your guitar. Sometimes they arent as anxious to get the ball rolling as you are to get your new toy!

Thanks deepblue, I needed a bit of re-assurance! The brand of the SG copy I am getting is "Starfire"....possibly the same brand as you had?

I found both "Starfield" and "Starfire" in the Harmony Central User Reviews, but no reviews for a doubleneck SG under either name. There was a listing for an "ES-335 Clone" under Starfire, so maybe they lean toward Gibson styles. Starfield didn't seem to have anything named after a Gibson model, but their SJ is apparently a Strat copy. That's all I know so far.

. . .USPS tracking number which, after searching on the USPS site, does not exist! I guess it may not have entered the database yet if it was only recently posted but I still worry because I have never bought from overseas before. Don't get too worried yet. My experience with the USPS "tracking system" is that it lets the recipient know when something's been "accepted," and then it can tell the sender when the item was handed over to the recipient or otherwise "delivered." Nothing in between, like the (usually) daily progress reports that UPS or somebody might provide. If it doesn't turn up, you let me know. He probably doesn't know you're "connected" here in da USA.

Mine was a Starfield. It was an exact replica of Jimmy Pages except it was white. So I guess you could say it was like Alex lifesons. ( Rush ) I paid $600 Canadian in 1985, it was used at the time. I do miss it from time to time I must say. Another little tid-bit, Of all the guitars I had the doubleneck was the one the ladies loved the most!...I wonder why that was??

all this double-neck stuff is very-well-and-good. but Rick Nielsen sez: if you have less than 5, you're just percentin' in the wind.

Instead of thinking that could make a guitar with five necks, they should have thought if they should. Thats one ugly guitar!!

oddly enough I have been listening to the Lost Trident Session of Mahavishnu Orchestra, John McGlaughlin, whose preeminent use of the Gibby SG double neck, made JPage percentage squared in his pants.
I saw them in support of Birds of Fire at the veneralble Armadillo World Headquarters (RIP), during the era of the Willie Nelson Cosmic cowboys. Opened with a white light illuminating the arpegios of Birds of Fire, then 2 hours of pummeling with that double neck beast drawn through Marshall stacks, had the cosmics walking out like zombies. "What happened, that weren't Willie, Waylon and da boys." Lone Star beer and Shri Chimony Fusion, what a freaking contrast.
That my friends, was double necking. I only wish that Ramona, the she-wolf, could twist herself into a pretzle like that.
RW
And Rick actually played everyone of the 5 necks. Very underappreciated guitarist. Maybe it was the propellerhead cap.
And ... Unk I am concerned because I was starting to look for that very pix and Rick before you posted it . I am concerned because I think I am channeling you. Aahhheeeeeeee!

Cheap Trick was ( at least at my school or my running circles ) considered a light weight girlie kind of band. I guess thats why Rick Nielson didnt get the attention he deserved. I did admire his playing. Cheap Trick were kind of like Vespas....fun to ride but dont tell your friends! At the time I was into Zeppelin, Queen, Rush...you know what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean, and wish that I hadn't been such a snob. I've been revisiting the genre (50 cent word of the day!) and am currently listening to quite a bit Cheap Trick. MONSTER stuff. And Rick actually played everyone of the 5 necks. Very underappreciated guitarist. And how! The man covers an amazing amount of musical ground and executes with flawless facility (75 cent word of the day!). And he's a Hamer guy - BONUS!

One other Rick innovation. He effectively eliminative the bain of guitarists everywhere --- Fret wear.
Check out the fashionable checkerboard 5-necker and it's fretless wonder. Gibby kinda stopped short on the LP Custom.

Well I certainly had nothing to worry about as far as receiving the guitar!! I got it today (which was a total of 4 working days!!) A couple of probs though.... The 6 string neck has some fret buzz around the 10th fret (maybe the flight over?) and the saddles on the 6 string bridge rattle (fixable). Also, it arrived with a broken toggle switch knob. Here is some pics... Cheers Shane

Well I certainly had nothing to worry about as far as receiving the guitar!! I got it today (which was a total of 4 working days!!) Niiiiice! Entirely possible. Fret buzz can come from lotsa little sneaky sources. There's a big write-up on Frets.com about "Chasing the Mystery Buzz" or something like that. I think we've got the link in at least one other recent thread here, or let me know if you want it but can't get right to the correct page.

I must say nightowl, that is one sweet guitar. I've seen few lefty double necks and none of them looked like SGs.

We saw Cheap Trick Sunday night, the guitar arsenal was even heavier than usual. Besides a smattering of his axes on their site, he brought out a few I was surprised to see. An LP sunburst, looked to be almost standard. Six and 12 string Tele's, couldn't see the name, but they had headstocks like the J5 (Hamers, I imagine). Robin Zander was also playing almost identical Tele's on a few songs, Rick also had a double neck Tele 6&12. On "Oh Candy" he was playing what I first thought was an LP junior, but as he turned toward us, I saw it had a neck pup, looked like four or five controls, and was a small double cutaway. It looked almost exactly like unk's old Melody Maker avatar. Besides the five neck, he had the double neck upside down Rick image and "Rockford" CD cover guitars.
It was a great show.

that may indeed have been a LP junior DC. there were a few of those made. there is even a recent model: but if it had a straight-sided, narrow headstock, it was a Melody Maker.

I was looking (trying to anyways) at the headstock as well as my middle-aged near-sighted eyes could from 22 rows back. all I could tell was that it was black with black tuners, which made the shape very hard to determine. The neck pup was a single coil with a tele-like chrome cover, may have even been a lipstick. the bridge was a HB.
of course...it could have just been another Hamer creation.....

SWEET.....glad it came! Looks like you're gonna have your hands full ..pun intended.
Congrats!
Now, to the other fellas talking about Cheap Trick, Rick Nielson is definitely underrated. While he can be as technical as anyone out there, he chooses to have fun and rock on. He's not onstage night after night wanking his wood to be adored. I saw Satriani a few times and props to him, when he plays he doesn't care if you're there or not, he loves his music and plays for the sake of playing. I could never think about playing Joe's style of music...but I could definitely rock the house down like Rick does....chunky rhythms, catchy licks, and it's FUN.
Didn't Ted Nugent start this multi neck guitar thing with Rick Nielson? I seem to recall them being on tour in the late 70's and Ted would watch Cheap Trick and all of Rick's guitars onstage and dare him to start playing a few at a time. I think that's how it goes...remember reading that in either Guitar Player or some other mag (possibly Cream) at that time.
