Just like the old story goes, I found an older MIM Strat in the attic of a house i was working on... struck a deal with the owner and brought it home. I've never seen one set up like this: The enclosed pictures show a switch where the lowest tone knob goes and a dual pickup in the bridge position... The pickguard was not hacked at all suggesting it came from Fender this way. I'm not well versed in your world GuitarNuts, what have I found here?

Not so much an oddball, just a fat strat with a coil splitter as suggested by DF.
Of note however are the Singles with a P-90 dual magnet design, and of course the humbucker. A clear indication of Gibson envy by Fender.

I'm thinking since it was built like this it is desirable to keep it stock other than the usual shielding etc.

I'm thinking since it was built like this it is desirable to keep it stock other than the usual shielding etc. everywhere where you can find guitar parts. for example store.guitarfetish.com/as for playing, if you want a humbucker that sounds not so hot but rather bright, just split the coil with the switch.

Thanks for the link DF... They had just what I'm looking for store.guitarfetish.com/hueqhssprasp.html Any pitfalls to using this admittedly cheap prewired pickguard till I can find a replacement dual pot that is broken on mine?

Thanks for the dose of reality... My "other" hobby is customizing cars, you would not believe the long list of things you can't do in the name of "authenticity"!

It's the scratchplate for a Strat Special which was known in the UK as the Contemporary Strat.
It's definately not a hacked plate - that's how they came out of the factory. HSS with Master Volume, Master Tone (a TBX!) and a coil tap switch.
I've got 2 - my original one which I bought in 1996 has a fantastic neck and a heavy body. I bought one of EBay that has a wonderful light body but a not so hot neck. So I've made a hybrid. It's currently sporting a white plate with single coils (hotrails at bridge and 2 gold lace sensors) and the standard Volume, twin tones. (Neck and Bridge - no middle).
The other one has been fitted with Lace Sensors too (Dually Red at bridge, gold at middle and silver at neck). It's going to be modded to go back to Master Volume and Master TBX Tone...The 3rd hole is going to have a 4P3T switch to put the Dually Red into Single, Series or Parallel Mode.
