Howdy...
First post on this board after lurking for a while. Seems to be an abundance of people who know what they're talking about.
I am in the process of building what I am calling a Springa-tar. Essentially, it is this: a 1 1/4" spring 16" in length stretched to 24", mounted to a 2"x4" 30" in length by two steel dowels. I have figured out the mounting problem, and now I am turning to y'all to see if you may have any ideas as far as the electronics go.
What I'd like to do is have a pickup (either a bass pickup robbed from a bass guitar or a homemade humbucker) mounted to the 2"x4". I'd like to wire the pickup through a tone and volume pot, ending in a female 1/4" jack. I've been playing with the idea of using two pickups, one in the middle and another placed further toward one of the mounting dowels, to pick up different frequencies.
The end result (hopefully) will be a messed-up sounding one "string" instrument, to be played with a bow, ebow or a hammer (like a hammer dulcimer), then run through effects (whammy pedal, etc.).
Don't know if anybody here has attempted anything similar, but I'd love to hear if anyone has, or if anybody has any suggestions or comments regarding said Springa-tar.
I haven't found threads regarding homemade instruments (non-standard guitars), but I have to admit, I haven't looked that hard.
Any ideas?

Welcome aboard.
Sounds like a plan.
They would pick up the different positional harmonic levels of the fundamental spring frequency.
And then comes the bass garage door Springa-tar, the depilatory-er,tar if you will (keep yer shirt on.....).
