Well I did it... I went into Long & Mcquade and ordered a Heritage Cherryburst Les Paul standard w/ 60's slim profile neck. They had 2 in stock, but I wasnt fussy about the colours. I did get to try it out. The neck is so much better then the Lp I owned years ago. It fits my hands much better. The Burstbucker Pro V pups sound better too. More edge then the old pups. Itll take 3 weeks to get it, so ill be bursting till it gets here.
It was a toss up between the Gibson and the Peavey. Im sorry guys, I wussed out. The Les Paul is just so damn pretty! You feel powerful....almost...dare I say "GOD" like when you hold it! I figure with my SRV Stratocaster, and the Les Paul, I can cover all the bases....right? ;D
What is this strange power Gibson holds over guitar players??

Guys... I know that a Strat and a LP will never cover every aspect of guitar music. In fact itll barely scratch the surface.
But, in my 'lil guitar world, there are only single coil bells, and Humbucker force......amen! ;D

What is this strange power Gibson holds over guitar players?? the last thing Gibson does befoer they ship out their guitars is put a thin coating of CRACK on them. as you play them in the store to see how they are, some of the crack enters your body through the skin. Then you are hooked for life. oh, and Jimmy Page plays one....

deepblue It isn't playing a Les Paul that makes you feel like God. Here at Guitar Nuts, you have over 500 postings. You are God.
I remember in 1980 when I bought my Gibson SG Standard, I thought I had reached the culmination of my guitar playing existence. That feeling didn't last forever though. After about a month I sometimes wanted it to have a brighter sound but even a treble boost didn't work. I finally resolved that I'd have to rewire it but looking at the pickups there was no possible way I could get all 4 wires out of that chrome covered, sealed for eternity epoxy filled brick. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!
I trust you bought a Les Paul that has humbuckers with exposed coils?

Wolf... No, the LP comes with what Gibson calls "Burstbucker Pro" pups. Alnico 5 magnets, and (so they say) are much improved then the stock LP pups of old. More output, a little brighter etc.
I too bought a Les Paul in about 1991. I just remember it being heavy, and the maple top was in 3; Yes, three pieces. I found that rather odd. Everyone I had ever seen came in a 2 piece top. That always bothered me, but was told thats the way Gibson made them at that time. I like the exposed zebra pups on a LP, but that wast an option with the model I was looking at. They dont come with pickguards anymore either. Well I sould say they come with the guitar, but they are kept in the case. The holes arent even drilled. hmmm?

Deep, Having 'buckers on the Tele, and a DM dual-sound 'bucker in the '51 weren't cutting it for me either. When I swapped the Xmas Dano for an upgrade, I was between an Epi SG and LP. I played them first sans amp to check the quality of the build, the SG had the edge there, but when I plugged them in and got that throaty rumble and eeriely long sustain from the LP, I knew which guitar was coming home with me. Yes, it would have been even throat-ier if I had popped douple the Epi's price for the Gibson monikered (pounds) heavier LP. I didn't consider that long because (besides being cheap), I decided If I popped for the Gibson, I might never touch the pups, where at some point if I get tired of the "limited" sound of the Epi's pups, It won't feel like sacrilege to change them....plus I think they're double wax dipped not epoxy on the Epi, so it may be easier to break them out (I'm still busy playing it, no interest in tinkering yet). Weird thing about the LP, with my other guitars I usually use my Digitech for a gain/distortion tool, the LP sounds weirdly wonderful with my FM212R's Gain channels (can you say "Bille Joe Armstrong" and "Peter Frampton" ) ;D .
