hey; I don't have any experience with these amps, but you can always check out harmony-central.com for some reviews on it.

edsg, Yeah, sorry, I guess I just expected that someone else here, anyone else, would chime in by now. I also have no clue about this amp. Perhaps RandomHero will pipe up, maybe he's seen one by now. sumgai

No experience, but at the risk of spreading rumors .... The comments I've seen on other sites is that they do the Hi-Gain screaming Marshal well, but that about it. The older classic rock, power amp crunch just isn't there.

I have an AVT50. I think its one of the best 50w amps on the market today. Yes, there are those who feel that only tubes will do to get that classic Marshall sound....sorry, not anymore. Solid state technology has come a long way. I owned an original "Valvestate" about 12 years ago. It does not even compare with the AVT50. I have many reviews that I have saved and they all basically the same thing...They were blown away by this amp! I use it here in my house and I have taken it to jam at various venues. It has never let me down, and it screams my friends, justs screams! I dont know how to post the reviews on this site, but if you like I can send it to you via e-mail. I respect all the die-hard " vintage Marshall" people and yes, this is only my opinion, but edsg...you have a great amp coming your way!....enjoy! btw...How many vintage Marshall fans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?...Four, one to screw in the lightbulb, and three others to stand around and talk about how great the old lightbulb was! You know I love you guys...right?

I have an AVT50 and it is a good sound, though I have had trouble with a noisey fan. The first one I bought made a terrible sound for about a minute when turning it on so I took it back and got another one. Two years on and it is starting to do the same sound.
I have the opportunity to trade the AVT50 for a JCM800 100w combo this weekend and I wondering if you guys (or gals) think it is worth the trade + $100 or so? The JCM has a stuffed valve and needs a new input jack soldered in but apart from that, it seems fine. What do you think?
Cheers, Shane

Have any of you compared the avt50 to its more tube-ish, and pricey stablemate, the DSL401?. This is a 40w all tube Marshall combo. I'm looking at options for 1x12 combos. The DSL seemed great when I had a blast on one, but I have not tried an Avt50.
I like everything about all-tube amps, except their price, delicacy, tube lifespan, high voltages, heat output and early 20th century technology. But that leaves the sound, the only part that realy matters. So Im wondering how close Marshall have got with their avt, with its one small tube?
thanks
John

Honestly JohnH, I cant tell the difference!!...I have had it cranked to its max ad it snarls at me as a good Marshall should. I too hated buying tubes, and having to treat my amp with a velvet glove in fear of cracking a valve. I feel I have great hearing, and can detect even subtle changes in an amplifiers performance...I think Marshall got it right this time. I do know that there will always be die hard tube fans....you know, the ones with a "Model T" in the driveway!...OUCH!

Deepblue - thanks for the feedback. I did eventually find a shop where I could compare the avt50 and dsl401. Theres no doubt that the avt is a great sounding and well made amp, and way above the all-SS mg series.
In the end, although I would have been very happy with the avt, something drew me to the dsl, once Id tested them both with my own guitar and pedal - and I was offered a great deal, so thats what I got.
I took it home on the back of the horse-cart. Apparently guys have been putting engines in these things and eliminating the horse? But what I say is - try putting used engine oil instead of horse manure on your roses!
We are all happy
John
