I have a Marshall JCM 800 2X12 combo with 75's, a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL with a 1960 4X12 75's stereo cab, and a Line 6 HD147 with a 4X12 Line 6 4X12 cab. You would think I have it made but am struggling to get a great tone. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Is it possible to use the Marshall tube amp to pre amp the line 6? Or are there any other combinations that would give me a powerful and unique sound? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jeremiah

Jeremiah, The standard answer is pat, unfortunately. "Great Tone" is in the ears of the beholder, and no one else. Without sound samples, I have no idea what appeals to you, making me worthless in trying to help you. Can you give us some ideas of what you're after? For my money (and just because I like to stir up the pot once in awhile ;D), I consider great tone easy to define..... There's D1ck Dale, and then there's everyone else on the planet. Either you can nail his tone, or you're an also-ran. Now, if I could just graft his fingers onto my hands........ sumgai

I can certainly appreciate that. What appeals to me is the sound that Satriani gets in the 2nd song of his cd Super Collossal. Meaty and with tons of sustain. I would like to experiment around with the mixture of the amps and cabs that I have. Du you know if I can use the Marshall in conjunction with the Line 6 solid state? I have been stuck playing in front of a computer for a few years now and it has been NUMEROUS years since I've hit the stage, so I really want a strong stage sound. Thanks for any help, Jeremiah

Jeremiah, Unless your name is also 1973tour, then go here for a discussion on Joe's equipment. ;D That's a bit tougher to answer. I'd say that for the most part, if your Marshall has a Line Out jack, then yes, you could run that into the Line 6 amp. If not, then you might try using the Marshall's headphone jack, but that's a bit scary. It's at a higher level than Line Out/In, and it's probably a stereo jack. Make sure you insert only a stereo plug into that jack - a mono plug might blow the thing up! (Don't laugh, I'm several hundred dollars richer today than I'd be otherwise, if it weren't for kids ignoring this advice, then bringing it in to be repaired.) Another option would be to try various stompboxes, or even build one or two of your own, attempting to achieve that desired tonality with the Line 6. It would certainly be lighter to cart around than a Marshall head! ;D Legal methods of preparation for a stage appearance: Illegal method of preparation for a stage appearance, but guaranteed to work, regardless of the possible consequences: Thems your options, Bunky...... good luck! ;D sumgai
