Whats the story behind "Orange" amplifiers? Ive seen them around but dont know much about them. Do they give Marshalls a run for their money?

Orange are a famous old english make, from the dawn of rock. See them on early Zeppelin and Free. They are still very much in action and make good stuff. Highly respected, but pricey compared to Marshall.
Last week I was touting one of my pedal designs at a local guitar store, and he plugged it into a Les Paul Standard, and an Orange 2x12 combo. That Orange absolutely kicked @ss!! Rich, crunchy, full and resonant all tube blissfullness. I wanted it very much, but it was out of my range and beyond my needs.

I seem to remember some of the original Orange amps of the 70s had some type of variac built in, at least the one that my buddy had did, Dont recall the mod number but I loved the tone.I know that the lead player for Head East used some Orange equipment as we talked about it between sets, again dont recall the particulars, but very good products.
