any one know about this ohm thing? if I have an 8 ohm amp does the cabinet have to be 8 ohms as well? I also have a cabinet rated at 16 ohms and I'm running my big amp through it and it is switchable between 4,8, and 16 amps. Any input would be appreciated on how to understand the matching.

I hope these help. ;D What impedance ("ohms") is and what it meansCalculating impedance valuesSo basicly your amp is happy when you connect correct "ohms" cabinet to it... Atleast tube amps require right impedance, but I think there is only some minimum load that solid states will see? Dunno, but I'll bet someone has a better answer. Anyhow safe bet is to use impedance your amp/amps manual prefers.. Eg. in your case depending if your amp is set to 4, 8, or 16ohms... It needs cab with same impedance... Hope this helped... Dark

It's always a good idea to have the amp's expected load be the same impedance as the load. That's why they're both specified.

An 8 ohm output amp connected to a 4 ohm speaker causes more currect to flow out of the output transistors and can damage them... .. You can turn on a transistor amp with no speaker connected but tube amps do not like this.. They want to see a resistance.. It is ok to connect a 16 ohm speaker to an 8 ohm amp out. ( Edited to reduce the shouting effect of all caps.)
