i bought a couple, back when you could get them for ~$200 US.
weak bottom end, crappy stock speaker, too much gain, LOUD!
okay value for that price, but i don't think you can find them new under $300.
i'd be more inclined to go with the Epi Valve Jr.
you can get some nice SE power amp distortion, since it's 5watts, it's only LOUD, not window shattering LOUD.

I just picked up a used G40V in great shape. I highly recommend putting an Eminence Delta Demon in it. I found the amp to be a little bright/harsh, especially with the mid range up, and that speaker smoothed things out. Check out for info and mods...

Hey, I also put a GE 12AX7WA in the V1, a JJ ECC81 in the V2, and a JJ ECC83S in the V3, and man it sounds really sweet now. I have the volume at 9 o'clock, the master at 12, the treble at 10 o'clock, the mids all the way down, and bass at 3 o'clock, man it sounds like a boutique amp!! I have 2 Dr. Z amps, and this one is now right up there as far as tone. It is still a little noisy wide open, but you don't play it wide open anyway, good luck!!!
