Hi all,
actually it's my sons Hughes and Kettner Edition Tube 20w. Only a few months old and just today it starts making a sound like ... well, like the ocean in a sea shell!!! Only on the "Lead" channel (with the gain on any setting) and not the clean. It's almost like the usual amp hiss but magnified many times, and sort of muffled. Took the back off to look at the tubes, all were glowing slightly as normal. Tried tapping them for microphonics, nothing. Just thought I would ask here first before taking it back in for a warranty fix up.
Thanks in advance.

Petemac,
sounds like a noisy resistor.
since the gain setting doesn't matter, that points to the fact that it's later in the chain than the gain control.
since it's only on the lead channel, it's before the channels "Y" together.
likely a carbon resistor rather than a metal oxide.
"boutique" builders often use carbon for that special "mojo", but IMHO they're too likely to become noisy, so i prefer to use metal oxides.
since it's under warranty, you'll obviously want to take it in, rather than do the replacement yourself, even if you feel comfortable with this level of repair.
good luck,
unk

Thanks Uncle,
Yeah, we will be taking it in for warranty, but it's good to get a second opinion first (if you know what I mean!)

I can hear the ocean in my amp!
i'm reminded of a bit Ron White did about being on a beach.
young girl in a bikini made of seashells....
... and if you take that girl and hold her up to your ear....
...you can hear
... her scream.

Don't hold it so close to your ear, use headphones.
(I waited and fought temptation, but I just had to.)

OK, she's back. A "broken" component on the circuit board and a dodgy tube. (No specifics; the warranty tech did the work and returned it to the store.) But it sure sounds sweet!!!
