Hi,
I've read the VC508 mods page at Guitarnuts and I need some help.
I'm interested in converting the tone control to a "normal" tone control; unfortunately, I can't read a schematic.
Can anyone explain the addition of the jumper wire on the tone control in layman's terms to me? Or can someone tell me how to get ahold of the author (John Atchley)?
Thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich,
Welcome to GuitarNuts2.
I'll keep things as simple as possible.
1 - The tone pot has 3 lugs. Of the two outer lugs, one is connected to two capacitors (.01uF and .0022uF). The other one is connected to only one capacitor (.0047uf).
2 - The lug that is only connected to one cap, needs to be connected through the new jumper wire to the center lug of the tone pot.
3 - Done!
btw, 96dB is quite loud. not painful, but definitely loud!

UnklMickey,
Thanks for the reply and the concise instructions. I'll give it a shot this week.
I tend to avoid 96 decibels these days, hence the 5w Amp. The 96db is short for 96 decibel freak, taken from a lyric from an old Mott the Hoople song (my favorite band).
Thanks again,
Rich

Soldered in the jumper wire and today and now I have a much more usable tone knob. Even after this mod, the amp is still very bright sounding. I'm leaving the tone set to around between 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock.
Interestingly, if you mistakingly install the jumper wire to the wrong outside lug, you get a much nicer sounding overdrive, but virtually no treble...
