hitman,
no one here can really tell you what amp to go with. there are so many options. solid state vs. tube. what are you planning on doing with it? ie- practice, small shows, big shows.....
for metal, the only advice i will give you is to get an amp with good gain. other than that, its all up to you. ;D
Tyler
also, define "inexpensive"!

i use a transtube auidition110 alot.. they dont mke them anymore, or renamed them...
anyway, if you go with a TransTube, the lead channels seem to have mixed reviews. one pointer i can give though, is of you dont use the lead channel (i don't) you can turn the pre and post knobs to 10.. for some reason it makes a huge difference when using an overdrive or distortion pedal. No idea how or why, but it takes out most of the annoying shrill and makes it sound tighter.
or you can try a radioshack special poweramp and run it into whatever speakers you have. (comeon, someone must have doen it)

Hmmm, Lots of mention of Peavey- I did have the opportunity to play through a combo for a while a few years back (a Bandit 112, maybe), and the sound was fairly Metal. Also a valve half stack for just one gig, and that was pretty metal too. I'm surprised there's no immediate rush of Marshall reccomendations- they can be a bit Rock'n'Roll, but with plenty of gain and the right guitar, most classic metal sounds just roll out of them. That said, I'm in the UK and as Fender gear seems to cost twice the price here than in the US, perhaps that works the other way around too?
I have been using a Line 6 pod myself for recording recently, and I have to say that it has proved very handy for many, many styles. I can't speak for the combos though...

Thanks a lot guys, I just bought a Line 6 spider 3. I only needed one loud enough for small gigs and it sounds great too. My second choice would be a peavy but the only ones they had at guitar center were in the 800 dollar range and i dont have that much right now
