I'm thinking of buying a Harley Benton GA5H guitar amp- a 5 watt class A valve head with a single 12AX7 and one EL84 for power. www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_ga5h.htm?partner_id=25293I was really just wondering how wattages compare volume-wise, having heard that 10 watts will put out about half the percieved volume of a 100 watt amp, through equivalent speakers. The more I look into electronics, the more it seems to take on a quantum physics type nonsensicality of results!

hmmm.... Looks an awful lot like a Epiphone valve Jr. head with a tone control added. A 5 watt tube amp is enough to really piss off your neighbors in an apartment building. On amps, power and sound, look at John A's original Guitarnutz site for and explanation.

In just about every case I have seen, a tube amp is louder than a ss amp of the same wattage (and sounds better). One factor to consider, though, is speaker size. A larger speaker moves more air, creating more powerful sound waves. So whether is it tube or ss, speaker size and construction will make a difference.
And ux4484 is absolutely right: "A 5 watt tube amp is enough to really piss off your neighbors in an apartment building." ;D

hmmm.... Looks an awful lot like a Epiphone valve Jr. head with a tone control added. Yes, they're made in the same factory, apparently- except one has a tone control and costs half the price. I didn't think an Epiphone logo was worth the money, personally. Thanks for the link too.

What, you must like live in a foreign country or sumpthin'. I bot the Epi combo new for $100 out the door at GC (yup, $100 U.S.) a year ago or so. Man, thats about £50!! I can't even get the Ga5h for that here. Incidentally, how did you feel about the pre-modded Valve Jr? If I can keep my meddling mits out of the amp and still get a good tone, I'd feel a lot safer... I was just hoping to replace the valves for some lower gain ones, and make a cabinet for a Celestion vintage 10 I have spare.

...And then maybe one with a pair of Jensen Alnico 12"s, for a bit more 'big and clean'.
