Hello all. This is a general question that may save me time and money, not to mention all of the stress that goes into both.
I'm seriously considering buying a Hot Rod Deluxe amp, but I wish it was just a bit quieter. What I was first going for was the Blues Jr., which is a bit quieter. My question is this. On reason I decided to go with the Hot Rod Deluxe is the fact that it has more features such as an effects loop. You can't get some feature like that and a full tone stack, etc. in small amps like the Blues Jr. So, would it not be the same difference if I ran a preamp in front of all my effects? I'm thinking about buying Siegmund's dual drive or Duncan's twin Tube drive which both uses sub miniature tubes. If I did get the smaller amp, would it e right for me to run right into the amp's preamp, or should I get a configuration that allows me to bypass that? I would essentially have my preamp at my feet and a power amp of better volume. What say you?

I can see that working fine! The signal chain would be the same as inside an amp, I think, and you could still use some effects before and some after the pre-amp in the same way.
You would be looking to bypass the preamp of the smaller amp though- otherwise the benefits of the 'in-line effects loop' would be completely lost by sending the effected signal through a pre-amp after all, along with the tone of the outboard pre-amp!
Many amps have a 'power in' jack socket, although I forget if my old Blues Junior had one or not.
