Hi there... Here is a little tune to illustrate some chord ideas I'm keen on. It's called "get a Grip" www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=3410398&q=hiThis makes use of open strings and the thumb over the top of the fretboard for the bass notes. You can get quite complex harmonies and melodies with this kind of technique. There are two parts...the first's chords are F#m - G - Em - A but the chord forms are like so... ----0---0----0---0---- ----0---0----0---0---- ----2---3----0---6---- ----4---5----2---7---- ----4---5----2---7---- ----2---3----0---5---- The second part goes... C - Bm - Bb - A -----0-------0----0----0------ -----8-(7)--0----3----0------- -----9-------7----3----6------- -----10-----9----3----7-------- -----10-----9----5----7-------- -----8-------7----6----5-------- The 6th string is fretted with the thumb except for the second last chord (Bb) which uses the 4th finger and some may find a little tricky. An interesting collection of chords with some interesting resolutions to it. You can also make some interesting melodies over it. You could look at it as being in Em but then there are both B's and Bb's and C's and C#'s and it tends to resolve to Amajor. There are a wide variety of explanations for how and why these chords make "sense" as a progression, I like the way the open notes make the chords a little ambiguous and so the progressions and resolutions are a little more acceptable... Certainly an exercise to take one out of comfortable progressions and key centres. BTW...the sound is the DIY Sustainer Guitar's neck and middle pickup's out of phase. It's an interesting sound, normally the mid/neck gives you a hollowed out sound but out of phase it has a rich warm sound. Anyone else got some interesting chord shapes and moves to share?... pete
