I've been playing guitar for a good 5 years now and until this day I haven't been able to play any artificial harmonics. All my friends can play them like mad in their "sweet spots" and it seems like they can only play them there. Well I was just playing around on my guitar and I was getting pretty tired. When I plucked a string I barely bumped into it again with my palm and BAM, there it was. It was almost an epiphany. I've watched videos with so many methods but never heard of this one
My friends all play it the "traditional" way, they cant do artificial harmonics without a pick... I can. They can only do them in the sweet spots. I can do them almost anywhere.
So really beyond bragging to people who are probably alot better than me... I do have some serious questions.
How do you play artificial harmonics? (the standard pinch harmonics or do you have your own special way like me.)
What pickups do you prefer or think get the best out of artificial harmonics?
My stock Jackson pickups in my Randy Rhoads are alot better for them than my friends Ibanez hollowbody which in turn is better than my other friend's Telecaster
What distortion pedal do you use or do you use your amp only?
I have my Boss Super Overdrive which isnt that great for them but my Rocktron Metal Planet is pretty much designed for chugging and artificial harmonics.

I think I noticed EVH using the side of his hand; my 'accidental' method uses an upstroke while catching it with the side of my curled pinky around the last knuckle, which pretty much works anywhere. Roy Buchanan called 'em whistlers!

EVH did it? sweet!
Your way sounds kinda similar to mine. striking then using some other digit or part of the hand to change the pitch.

I remember when I used to play my Jackson. I could get a cool harmonic by lightly touching the G string at the first fret. I had to have the gain up though, but it was sweet!

Here's a really good tutorial on all types of harmonics.
