I'm looking at the Boss comp/sustain, for no other reason than that I've not ever heard a Boss stomp I didn't like. Anyone have any opinions on a better one?

I dont know about a better one for the money. I have one and I absolutely love it. I seriously wouldnt even consider playing without it. The only gripe I have with it is that it is a little noisy. There are many mods for these pedals out there I intend to try when I buy all the other stuff Im jonesing for! I would definately recomend this pedal. Peace Damian. Oh yeah check out this site hes got some mp3's of a modded boss compressor as well as some other cool stuff. Its under the pickaurd sheild category.

No, but I checked it out at the local guitar shop. I'll have to play around with it a lot more before I decide though.

Oh yeah check out this site hes got some mp3's of a modded boss compressor as well as some other cool stuff. Its under the pickaurd sheild category. I didn't see the link anywhere. Can you run it by us again? Thanks. What got me on a quest for a good compressor was the revelation in the video "The 12-String Guitar of Roger McGuinn" that Roger has a comp built into his Rickenbacker 360/12RM. ("So that's where some of that sound comes from.") I scored eBay deals on two MXR DynaComp (M102) compressors, and had one of them modded by Analog Man. There is a difference between the stock and modified ones. Maybe not Nigel Tufnel grade (”You can play a note, and go grab a bite and when you come back it will still be singing yaaaahhhH!!!”), but close enough. Here's Analog Man's compressor (CompROSSor) page, with sound samples down towards the bottom. At almost the end of the page, there are comparison samples of a stock Dunlop Dynacomp, and the same pedal modified to DynaRoss specs. I love that clip of the 12-string doing the instrumental from "Nowhere Man." www.analogman.com/rossmod.htmMy modded one now "lives with" my Jay Turser Hawk-12. -- Doug C.

I have used the cs-3 for a long time, but was always annoyed by the extra noise it created as you added "sustain" I recently bought a MXR Super Comp on ebay. INSTANT GRATIFICATION! We all know it takes a little while to dial in a compressor. But after just a little tweeking, I found that perfect sound. I highly recommend this one!

I've been playing with a Boss CS-3 and an MXR Dyna Comp for a little while now, and I personally prefer the sound of the MXR. I modded my CS-3 and still couldn't get much of a sound I liked out of it (maybe I need to experiment more). The MXR, however, I like without even much twiddling, and I haven't even modded the sucker yet. I'll let you know when I finish the mod tonight or tomorrow, how it sounds. Anyone ever played a Keeley Comp?

I know this is an older thread but to answer your Keeley question, yes, I have played one. Possibly the best compressor I've ever tried. I'm not much of a compressor guy and to be honest, have a hard time getting them to work for me. The Keeley was a breath of fresh air. At the Arlington Guitar Show one of his guys helped me out and explained the usage better to me and such then set me up for a less compressed setting, more sustain. Holy cow was it nice. They're pricey, but worth it IMO.
