I suppose it is your adaptor. first, check its polarity (boss pedals use the center-negative type). but, I have an universal adaptor made in china, and whenever it is plugged into any effects I have, they would hum even though the polarity is correct..
Never happens when I use my "for-effects pedals use only" adaptor made in taiwan, btw (those annoying hums).

..then it could probably be fake or defective. well .. but I'm not surprised since there's a lot of bad remarks about Boss' original adaptors in the Harmony-central.

I think a polarity conflict would cause the device to just "not work." (Not sure if it could damage it, too.) Just a hint for a reasonably-priced, very quiet power supply that won't hog additional outlet space beyond the one it's plugged into: the 1-SPOT. www.visualsound.net/1spot.htmWith the right cables, one adapter can run up to twenty pedals, but I bought two of 'em anyway.
