hey, im looking to best replicate a smashing pumpkins type overdrive, and am open to any suggestions as to the gear that would best help.
i have heard that the big muff would be useful, but cant decide wether to buy the electroharmonix big muff pi or the sovtek version. Is there any real difference between the two?
what other stuff would help get that pumpkins distortion? cheers

Not sure about the difference between the big muff pi and sovtek, but first, let's clarify which "pumpkins distortion" sounds you're after. To my ear, the Gish album featured a more traditional guitar-straight-into-overdriven Marshall sound, very unadorned and raw. I would also assume the guitar tracks on that album were fewer in number than the next albums. (Which would makes sense, considering it was their first album and they probably didn't have as much money or time to indulge themselves with. Gish was recorded at Butch Vig's Smart studio in Madison, WI, I believe.) The guitar distortion you hear on Siamese Dream, however, is different from that album in two respects: one, most of it is the result of many, many more guitar tracks mixed together; and two, Billy Corgan used an EBOW on many of the tracks on this album. The EBOW is what gives his guitar sound that rubbery, whacked-out, slightly artificial sounding distortion that I think you're referring to when you say "pumpkins distortion." So if I were you, I'd get a hold of an EBOW (http://www.ebow.com) and I'd also Google some Billy Corgan interviews from the Siamese Dream era. I seem to remember him referring to recording an almost ridiculous number of guitar tracks on Siamese Dream (vs. Gish) as well as noting his newfound love of the EBOW. Not sure about gear/techniques on any subsequent albums. Hope that helps, and if anyone sees any errors in my post, please feel free to correct me. I'm certainly no expert on Mr. Corgan's gear etc., though I did meet him once and can say he was a nice enough guy. Cheers.

I've never had a problem getting the Pumpkin's sound with a Big Muff. US, Russian - doesn't matter, cause yr gonna wanna mod it anyway. Google the "Creamy Dreamer" mod - that'll get you pretty close...
