Hey Guy's Chris here, new to board ..... I have a Pretty nice Pedal board going and wanted input on any pedals that You guys feel are Must haves. Right now my pedal board is:
1.- Carl Martin Plexitone 2.- Carl Martin Delayla XL 3.- Carl Martin Compressor/limiter 4.- Carl Martin Two Faze phaser 5.- BBE Sonic Maximizer- Stomp version 6.- Peterson Strobo Stomp tuner 7.- Boss RC-20XL Looper
Im using Planet Waves Cable Kits and cords and Furman AC surge protectors (the Martins are all AC) Do you feel I should go also with the Carl Martin Chorus and EQ pedals? I realize I obviously have a system going here, I guess what I really want to know is do you think its a mistake for me to use so many of one brand? I bought my pedals solely on reputation and sound clip comparisons on the net .....which is probably dumb but I don't get out much I have kids and all that and am just getting back into playing again after a long divorce etc.etc. blah, blah ...... So Im building my setup piece by piece....truth be told Iv'e yet to play any of my stuff as like I said Piece by piece.... I just recieved the neck for my Warmoth guitar and am waiting for the body and still need an amp... Any suggestions on pedals to benefit my setup so far ? I figure I might as well take my time since Im not playing the stuff yet anyway and just buy the best I can find.....with in reason of course Im not rich.....

I swear by my Ibanez Tube Screamer.
And if swearing doesn't work, I can fight with it; it's a very durable unit.

I think a good treble booster should be mandatory - they can add SOOOO much to a tone! I have a homemade one that sits on top of my amp to liven it up a little, then I have another at my feet when I need to get ten kinds of crazy. Way too many great guitar tones were just guitar-booster-amp...

1) A Wah pedal, Cry Baby or Morley ... (different sounds but both tend to work fine for me)
2) Big Muff Pi (I like my Russian but the US one's are just as good, if not better)
3) Ibanez Tube Screamer, TS8 if you can find one, TS9 if you can't.
4) Boss DD3 or Digitech DigiDelay digital delay
5) Digitech CF7 or Boss CH1 chorus.
6) Ibanez FL9 or Boss BF3 flanger

Dunlop Cry Baby wah Ibanez Super Tube
I also use a Danelectro Tuna Melt tremolo and Ibanez SC10 Super Chorus, but the above two are my "must-haves".

For me, VOX Wah, DOD Juice Box. Those would be the two on my board I wouldn't be without.

So far, and it feels odd to say it, but the one pedal which does exactly what I want and is hard to upgrade to something else is my Boss BD-2 Bluesdriver! I look around to get away from the Boss thing occasionally, but every other overdrive seems to 'EQ' the sound up a bit, and sound too rocky. I use this to get a lively, sparkling tone, not clean as such, but not really breaking up either. It sounds very amp like to me, and just adds gain to a clean Fender amp tone, rather than distortion, EQ, and compression.

People people, we forgot one of the most important toys! A good VOLUME PEDAL! It's a must have, especially if you accidently touch the volume knob on the distortion pedal! Oh, a noise suppessor can't hurt either.

Oh, a noise suppessor can't hurt either. Mlrpa- Any good noise suppressors you can recommend, reasonably priced? I'm thinking of getting one, never have used one before. Do these things clip off the highs at all?

I have mentioned it before, but if anyone can get their hands on a Boss Enhancer EH-2 (stopped making them in 1997) The best way I have heard it described is, its like lifting a blanket off of your amp. Exposing all kinds of tones and undertones that are crystal clear. I have one, and I really enjoy the melodic responses I can get from it. Sounds great with acoustic as well.

An EQ pedal is a must, IMHO. Especially if you've never used one before. The first time you do, look out. You might find out that ever-elusive tone you've been looking for was right there all along.

I think you might want to slim down the scope of the question. lol As it is right now, you are just going to get everybody shouting out their favorite pedals! lol But while Im at it, I think that I will shout out some of mine. BBE - Sonic Stomp (I noticed that this was in your setup. Excellent pedal.) Maxon - OD808 (Amazing overdrive pedal. I assume that the OD9 is also amazing, but I have not heard it myself. I really want to try the new OD9 Pro.) Electro-Harmonix - Big Muff Pi (USA). (I cant speak for the other models.) Visual Sound - Any of their overdrive pedals. I own the Jekyll and Hyde. BTW, I own an Ibanez - TS9 and I have played on a vintage TS808 (yes the one that sells for ungodly amounts of money on ebay), neither of which I thought were that special. They are both very decent pedals, but I like the Maxon and the Visual Sound overdrives way better. But thats just my opinion. Tone is an opinionated topic and people are bound to disagree. I will say this though: I work in a music shop as a guitar repairman and sales clerk and I have seen countless people who hear with their eyes. They were sold on products before they ever heard it just because of the brand name. I try to listen with my ears. Price and brand shouldnt have anything to do with whether or not you think something has a good tone. I own a 15 dollar Dan Electro pedal that I think is awesome. Its not as quality built as my other pedals, but it sounds good. To this day I havent played on a Boss pedal that I liked. I own a few of them. They sit around collecting dust. So I guess that no matter what anybody says here (me included) dont take their word for it. Go try out a bunch of pedals and see which ones you like. Good Luck on your tone quest!

Somebody mentioned it earlier the thread but I have got to say that after owning a lot pedals the single most important pedal to have has got to be the EQ. I've been through all kinds of amps, effects, pup's etc and I'll have to say that I found the humble eq to be the most overlooked and important in my lineup. I use three of them. I have one coming out of the guitar prior to OD and boost the highs, Ihave another one after my OD and Dist coloring the final and I have a third I use for a volume boost in effects loop for leads and I can give my lead a little extra mid. Whatever it takes to cut through! These puppies can sure wake a sleeping giant!

My favorite pedals ....hmmmm .... you mean today? It changes all the time. If I had to choose just one pedal to use, it would be my Barber LTD .... no ... Keeley Blues Driver...maybe my Xotic RC. Seriously, I have learned not to sell pedals because next week .... month, I will want them back ;D Or I could just choose the Axe-FX and would have it all. Jim

Well it's evolved a little over time. My must-have list, as it stands today: BBE Sonic Stomp - absolutely love this pedal! Deepblue's "blanket" analogy describes this unit to a tee as well. Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde - most versatile OD/distortion box I've found. I got this & immediately sold my vintage Ibanez Super Tube. Danelectro Tuna Melt Tremolo - They don't make 'em any more, but the new Danos are nice too, and have a metal case instead of the plastic one on the TM.
The list above, a CryBaby (which is a nice effect but I wouldn't call a must-have), and a tuner essentially make up my pedalboard.
