Does anyone know of a good overdrive unit that can get me sounds like "Funk 49" by the James Gang, SRV's "Cold Shot" or Reverend Horton Heat's "Psychobilly Freakout"? I was looking at Danelectro's Fab Overdrive but I'm afraid of it being "cheap" instead of "inexpensive". I kind of like Digitech's Screamin' Blues but I have had a bad time with Digitech pedals and dont want to buy another for a while.

I would recommend a Sparkle Drive. To me it has a great OD circuit with lots of range. But the best part is the ability to mix or blend in clean signal with the OD. Think Keith Richards using two amps, one clean and one slightly over driven. Same with early SRV. I recently acquired one, and have since sold my TS-808.

What about Boss' Super Overdrive or Blues Driver? I was thinking about a TS-808 or a TS-9 but I'm not willing to spend that much on a pedal right now. Also I can just hook up one of my arion stereo pedals and run it to both channels on my amp since I can run both at the same time.

I bought a Boss SD-1. Im satisfied but I wish it were a blues driver. My local music store was out of BD-2s and I wasnt willing to wait. Does anyone know of any good SD-1 mods to make it more effective for blues? That is a mod that I can preform and dont have to send in a pedal and pay for.

VonFrenchie... I may be wrong, but I think SRV used a Fender rotary cabinet on Cold Shot. The name escapes me at the moment. It was a Vibro something or other. Fenders version of a Leslie. I do love that sound!

Yeah, I've heard of those. Arent they the cabs with the motors in them w/ rotors that block parts of the speaker to give it a swirling effect.
But that doesnt quite answer my question. Cool fact but still are there any schematics for SD-1 mods that anyone can find?

I'm not sure about the schematic you are looking for, but you might consider checking out Analog Man. He does fantastic mods to many pedals and a VERY reasonable price. And lightning fast turn-around.

He did! If you crank the recording up, you hear the Vibratone divide each beat into triplets.
An interesting tid bit more about the recording of Cold Shot can be found on pages 16-17 of "Guitar Edge" July/August 2006 issue.
vonFrenchie: Out of curiousity do you got some blues to play at a gig on Friday ;D

IndyGuitarist has several flavored mod in kit form and Aron's Stompbox has some general info on modifications. I don't remember any specific listings of mods off the top of my head.

a Boss SD-1 can supposedly be modded to TS-808 specs. I saved this pic years ago, but never got around to trying it out. it seems simple enough if you can wield a soldering iron... i can't... YMMV Good luck!

Just buy a Digitech Bad Monkey. Cheap, solid, and something you won't regret. i retired my Tube Screamer and every other overdrive I have after buying the Bad Monkey.

I bought a modded Bad Monkey off of Ebay from Humphrey audio out of Nebraska, and the thing really rocks. I've never played a stock Monkey, but I imagine it would have to sound pretty good right out of the box.

I just gotta say, I love my Tech 21 Double Drive. Can sound warm, fuzzy, bright, mellow, hard, rockin', vintage, marshall-y, fenderish, you name it. Maybe it's not supposed to sound like anything already out there, but I love it. The only thing that it doesn't do for me is REAL fuzz. That's why when I scrounge up enough chips I'm gonna pick up a GI Fuzz from www.miaudio.com Coooooool fuzz sounds. Good luck! Bats

The SD-808 mod made it smoother. Before the SD-1 was really harsh and cut out alot of lows but now the lows stay and the highs are boosted less. Its a great mod if you want to save money.

Hi vonFrenchie! I'm glad that worked out for you! If you ever get the chance to a/b your modded SD-1 with a TS-808 RI, I sure would love to know what (if any) differences remain.
fwiw, right now I'm really liking the Vox Cooltron Over the Top Boost pedal that I just got. To my ears, it seems to have that British Classic Rock flavor, in the styles of Free, Bad Co., Humble Pie, Led Zep...

Stevie Ray indeed did use a Fender Vibratone, also known as a Leslie 16. I have one and it's a killer effect. Check it out here: www.regiscoyne.com/Leslie16As far as Funk 49, that was recorded with a Telecaster driving a Deluxe Reverb that was dimed. Any Tele or even a Strat through a decent Fender amp will get that tone, add a Tube Screamer or an SD-1 or a Bad Monkey for a little overdrive help.

doc, You might wanna make that "a decent Fender TUBE amp". Both of my solid state Bassman amps sound real clean up until the threshold of pain, then they sound like they're gonna die a horrible death. Come to think of it, ditto for my FTR, it's way too loud before it gets it's crank on. Better make that "a decent small Fender tube amp". ;D sumgai

I guess that would depend on the venue. In my basement, I get a decent "Funk 49" (One of my favorite songs to play!) using the neck and mid of a 3 single coil (Strat style) guitar through a Peavey Bandit TransTube 112 with a Big Muff Pi.

I didn't think in those terms because all my amps are tube and I haven't owned a SS guitar amp since the seventies. Back in the James Gang days Joe used small Fender tube amps like Champs and Deluxes cranked to the max. There weren't any overdrives like Tube Screamers back then, and I doubt if he used a fuzz face or similar effect. With a bigger amp like a Bassman or a Super Reverb you would probably have to put an attenuator to tame the volume after you get the tone you want. Good Luck, Regis
