Yamaha MagicStomp - afaik discontinued now, but several places are selling off very cheap. Plenty of very usable effects, with user editable parameters. If you get the version I you can update the firmware to version II (the only thing missing will be a headphone socket). Also there's plenty of patches online, including acoustic and bass.

The bass v-amp is also cool because it offers acoustic guitar simulation (will transform your electric pickup sounds into a few acoustic guitar sounds) as well as many different tube amp models and digital FX. Price in music stores for that and the guitar version v-amp is a very economical $99. I have both! And I don't have any connection to the company that makes them. Good to start out on and if you even become a mega rock star, you can always resell it for most of what you paid, since there is plenty demand for them.

panda, Depends on your definition of cheap.......... Zoom makes some more-than-decent stuff, used pieces are nearly always a good deal. Ditto for Korg, IME. If you're thinking more like the big boys, but have only a little-boy budget, take a seond look at your local Guitar Center. The whole chain recently received new demo units from all the major players. What'd they do with the previous demo units? Put them on the used-gear counter! Priced about 30-40% off, that makes them affordable in my book. The box and/or manual might be missing, but at those prices, who cares?! Manuals can always be found online, and once you get it home, are you gonna care about a box anyway? Food for thought, that's all. sumgai

I saw the GNX3 at GC down to 299.00. It's for guitar, but has bass settings (simulations) for guitar. Plus it's an 8 track recorder

I like my Line 6 PodXT. Not what I would call cheap, and I can't say that it out-performs a tube amp with stomp boxes, but it has a lot going for it. I think I would reccomend the XT Live since it is floor based and is cheaper than adding a foot controller to the XT (which is what I did). It also depends on what you call "cheap". I bought a $50 Korg bass pedal (axb3?) for my son and he likes some of the sounds really well. However, it is cheap plastic construction. I guess a lot of it comes down to your budget. How much do you really want to spend?

I've got a V Amp-2 and a Johnson J-Station. The V amp is easier to make changes to the presets and to save.
The Johnson is not made anymore. But, you might be able to pick one up on Ebay for around $90 -$100 U.S. It'll be used, but what the hey.
Sound wise, as weird as this sounds, both sound good going into a PC. But, the V-amp doesn't seem to translate well over to a sound system. I can play the Johnson, using my Peavey Classic 30 as a monitor, and get the tones I want. Then I go direct and the sounds replicate well through the house system.
The V amp-2 sounds good through the Peavey, when I'm making my adjustments and all, but then it sounds odd through the house system. The bass gets muddy, the highs thin out and sound tinny. Not sure why it would do that, but it has.
You can get a V amp, new for under $100 including shipping, from independent dealers. That's where I got mine. Or, you can get it from Musicians Friend for $99 plus S+H.
I'm going to work on the V amp through the house system more this coming week. I think it should be OK. If not, I'll go back to the J Station live and use the V amp-2 for recording to the PC.
