I've recently hit onto the idea of using an ebow in my playing, but I'm wondering what all you out there have to say about them - people seem to love what they can do, but there's also plenty of criticism on the web directed at them.
Also... i live in South Africa, and i don't expect it to be easy to try out at my local guitar store. We do actually have decent music stores here in darkest Africa, believe it or not, but nevertheless I'm not so optimistic about something as odd as this.
anyhoo... What can you tell me? Anyone who's got one/had one/wants one... what is your opinion?

I had one way back in the dark ages of playing. That's right, the 80's. I loved it! It allowed a different aspect of playing to come out, a more melodic modal style that I find it hard to do without one. As for finding one, check eBay. There all over the place, but expect to pay a hefty price.

Ive had one for years. I do take it out from time to time. As ive stated in an earlier forum, I play a mean theme to "The Godfather" using my trusty e-bow.

For me, it's Amazing Grace. If I can't bring a tear to your eye with that one, then you're already dead. Still got mine, but don't use it often. sumgai

I've used it a lot on my recent CD "Experience of Space". It's a wonderful tool, I've used it on electric but also on acoustic, and in a track I've combined it in acoustic with bottleneck. If you find the sweet spot on the acoustic you can produce some marvelous sounds.
That CD is probably a bit out from the usual listens of a forum like this one as it could be defined as "ambient electronic", a bit in the ancient tradition of the 70's, absolutely not a "dance" thing, but the guitar is almost everywhere, sometimes processed through synthesizers but mostly very evident with it's natural sound....
Anyway I love E-Bow...I'm currently having fun with it and a looper, you can really make some thick pads, expecially if coupled with a nice volume pedal to have some interesting harmonic crossfades...

there are various circuits floating around on the net, i believe, but none of them would give you the advantage of the correct chassis design, which, due to the string guides and such on it, seems prety essential. Also it's a very complex circuit crammed into a tiny space... not fun. The only advice i've seen on this topic was on a guitar and effects DIY electronics page, and it said its really not worth it for how complex and specialist the circuit is.

Hey there... You may know me from the infamous sustainer thread over at PG and here... guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=wiring&action=display&thread=1136497404Anyway...on the subject of making your own ebow...the enclosure is the tricky thing, it really is a good design and tricky to replicate or better... However...the circuitry is ultra simple, winding the coils, particularly it's internal pickup coil may be a little tricky... We have developed circuits in the PG thread that are more than adequate and simple and cheap to build...I recently made these two and another LM386 version that would do the job really well... I recently renewed an interest in the ebow again after seeing this video demo... So...put the thinking hat on and found this... It is a "sugar cube" relay...about A$4 and easy to take apart...inside is a coil of about 250 ohms...enough to get a good signal for this purpose... Probably no way to get around making the driving coil, but that's a lot easier... Anyway...doing a little side project into the DIY ebow myself...let you know how I go. It is not complicated but it will be difficult to better and very hard to do it elegantly I suspect. It should be a lot easier than making a sustainer, that's for sure! ...maybe a good introduction to getting into this technology... OK...enough from me... pete
