Alright, figured i would get this section going.
is anyone familiar w/ how ovations tend to have cracks in their finish? i know this is due to having a plastic back(the wood expands and contracts at a different rate than the plastic.
just wanted to see if anyone knew of any ways to keep this from happening.
also, my ovation has may cracks, so who knows if i can just refinish it or if i have to put a whole new front on.

I had a nice 12 string Ovation years ago... It never cracked, but I found it a pain in the butt to play while sittiing down because of the round back. It kept wanting to tip on me. I believe the backs are made from a sort of graphite, or polymer and not from plastic.

yeah, i agree that the slip rather badly. ive gotten used to it now. my girlfriend wont play my acoustic cause she hates it so much for that reason only. if im not mistaken, old ones are plastic backs which expand at different rates than the wood. when those were being used roughly 50% of the finishes cracked.(i got this from talking to a few people at local shops.) since, ovation has realized their errors and now use polymer backs.

Yeh, I've got an Ovation. My first acoustic (and currently my only one). The finish has cracked quite a bit, but I rather like the look of it. Your best bet would be to refinish it.
The round back can be annoying sometimes, but you get used to it.

Tyler, The finish of your Ovation isn't cracking just because the back is made of a different material. Indeed, the substance of one piece won't affect the finish of another piece, even though they are mated to form a single item, such as your guitar. What you are seeing is what we call "weather-checking". That's what happens to a nitrocellulose finish as it ages - the weather makes it expand with heat and shrink with cold, hence the name. All that expansion and contraction takes its toll on the finish itself, and what you see is the result. You can rub it all out, and start over with a fresh finish job, but I can all but guarantee you, that will hurt the value of the guitar. If'n you don't believe me, just check this out: If it's good enough for Willie, do you dare to say that you deserve any better? ;D sumgai

I've noticed over the years that Ovations are the ones that suffer from this condition for the most part? I've owned a few Ovations and currently own a Ballader LX and have never had this problem.

I've seen some newer Martins and Takemines (However you spell it) suffer from the same problem. I think it's the new types of finish that these companies are using to help cut cost. My 2 Ovations, a 92 Celebrity cc57, and my Applause AA35, with added preamp and eq, haven't so much as a crack in the finish.

hmm, i have an older ovation, cant say exactly how old(picked it up at a pawn shop for about $150), but it is old none the less. it is cracked very badly. it doesnt bother me, i just wanted to see what others thought of it. i rather like the rustic look of it. not to mention, it still sounds great. after all, its music, its how it sounds not how it looks right?

mlrpa, I think you'll find it's the opposite that's true - these two makers are still using a lacquer-based finish, and not a plastic one. All the guitars you listed sport a high chance of having a polyurethane finish, and not a lacquer-based one - hence the lack of weather-checking, which is a nitrocelluose trait, as explained above.

'90 Ovation Collectors' has no cracks. I recall it has a catalysed finish. A friend's Applause has a crack but sounds good. I was warned about playing next to a campfire or fireplace then placing it back in a cold corner or on the ground, etc. That'll crack 'em good. git

indeed. i found min at a pawn shop for under $200. it came cracks already installed. also pre-done were a few gouges out of the finish, one grover tuner, and two indentations in the back of the neck.
but it still sounds great. ive played martins live and it took forever to get it sounding the way i wanted. all i have to do is plug my ovation in and im done...

i have two Collectors editions , a 90 , and a 98 , and they have no finish cracks . my old Korean 1528 Ultra has a couple , but that guitar is my " beater " and the cracks add character.
i always thought Ovation used catalyzed finishes instead of nitro lacquer . they always seem to have beautiful flawless finishes ( unless of course they crack )
