Hi , guys - Just wanted to show some new parts I got . I've mentioned a while back that I have a friend who used to work at the Fender custom shop........ anyway he's still got a bunch of old stuff - here's what I bought .......... - a mahogany tele w/ a flame maple top . - a loaded tortoise 'guard - a flame maple Strat neck w/ rosewood - a who knows what kind o' strat ....... looks like it would be real good for playin' roots rock ;D Got a great deal - $190 for the lot The strat's a little gaudy but it sure is heavy..... I think I'll save it for last & start on the tele.. Anyway , just wanted to share that - -lpf3

lpf- Nice grab! Looks like your summer is all planned . . . Post some build photos, I'm anxious to see what you do with the Tree-of-Life-Magical-Healing-Stonecaster. ;D Did they simply not get around to routing for the jackplate? !

Thats quite a scoop.
I used to play a mahogany bodied Tele, albeit a semi-hollow one, and it sounded very good.
That strat body is very unusual- I'd love to see how it works with a scratchplate, but what is going on with that neck pocket? Will you need a neck with a special shaped end, or can you tweak it back to 'normal' neck specs?

newey-
What a great name ! ;D Since I've only been typing since February I think I'll just say Stonecaster (for now ) ;D
Don't know about that jackplate , or why the project was abandoned , or who it was being made for etc. , just that it wound up in the "extra " pile & my buddy got it ..... You might have to zoom in to see it , but check out the bug carved just below & left of the bridge rout , also Jesus carved almost due left of the rout ..... Well this is Southern Ca. , that could be " Haysoos " . ;D
Andy-
I'm told that the neck pocket is routed for a set neck . I haven't looked into it but wasn't aware Fender offered that .... Probably beyond my ( current ) ability so I'm going to " fix " the heel & rout for a " typical " Fender neck . The scratchplate ( I like that term better but I'm geographically bound to call it a pickguard ;D) will probably be black pearloid , I've held several colors up to it & that one seems to look best ( for now )
As for the Tele , I'm planning to make mine semi-hollow as well , I'm expecting it to have kind of a rich , full tone . Is that about right ? Anyway I'll keep ya's posted .

lpf-
I would think basic black would be better. With so much detail in the guitar, adding detail such as pearloid in the guard on top of that might tend to make it overly "busy" looking. A plain one would focus the eye more on the body. Just IMO.
Please tell me that you're going to hollow it out from the rear and cover the rear with a veneer back, rather than losing that nice maple top? Is it bound, top and bottom? If not, you'll probably want to bind the bottom edge in order to get a good-looking result. You can do it without a binding, but the binding covers a lot of sins as far as mating the veneer back to the body.
That's a bit of woodworking if you haven't done it before (I certainly haven't!) Keep us informed as you move forward!

It's not veneer, you'd want aboot 1/8" minimum, preferable 1/4". Find some matching flame maple.
Hollowing out from the back is easier on a fixed bridge body. The only holes that you need to worry aboot are the string ferrules and the neck screws (and the "top" already has them "started" for you).

newey You may be right about the basic black 'guard-- I put that tortoise one on it & it makes the body seem pale & plain. And I already have 2 - 13 x 20 black blanks , 1 single ply & 1 b/w/b . Something about a bird in the hand ....... Just a little worried that the plain black would look like a flat spot amidst all that texture . We'll see ...... As for the Tele , the woodwork is easy , I have the tools & the technology ( Chris , I agree with the 1/4 inch part , but probably on top , either way the control cavity's gonna go.... )Also the string ferrule holes aren't there yet , I was gonna position the ( ashtray ) bridge & use it's holes as a drilling jig . No , the hard part is going to a forum of my peers ( who I've come to like and respect ) and state with a straight face that I'm gonna grind a flame maple top off my guitar ;D ;D ;D That gives me a blank stare "canvas " to work with . Working at a cabinet shop gets me easy access to wood so who knows ? Flame , Birdseye , Ash , either way this is gonna be a lotta fun & I'm gettin a Tele First step is routing the neck & middle pups & take it from there . -lpf3

I told you not to tell me that! Now I'll have to take an Ambien or I'll have flame- maple nightmares.
