I've been hanging around these forums for a while with the intent to understand electric guitar pickups and shielding. I made an attempt to shield my Mexican Telecaster to keep it from humming so loudly when I play on the stage in my church. After I finished with the shielding job, nothing changed. I still have a ridiculous amount of noise when I play at my church. Right now I am borrowing a friend's Epiphone SG to play at church and it has absolutely no problem with playing underneath the stage lights at my church (all the lights are on on huge racks and they are all able to dim and fade to 8 different settings).
Now I have decided that my next step must be to buy a pair of noiseless tele pickups. I am pretty confident that this will fix the problem just because the pair of humbuckers in my friend's SG solved the problem completely.
I am very inexperienced to what type of sound I like or what type of tone I am trying to get so I guess I will just try to get the pickups that most closely resemble a normal "tele" sounding tone. I was looking at the SCN's for $135, but then I started looking at the much cheaper Bill Lawrence pickups. Basically I just want a pair of normal looking tele pickups that are designed to kill all the unwanted noise.
Please help me out and recommend me the right pickups or pickup brand.
By the way - I play through a gibson goldtone , 15w class A tube amp.

I have SCNs in My "Proper" Telecopy.Among the humcanceling Tele pickups that I've tried, I like them the best. I've not tried the Bill Lawrence (Willie Stitch, not the Czech/cheque guy) pickups.

Yea, I have been considering the guy of "BillLawrence.com". Supposedly he was the one that designed Fender's SCNs. So if he has some that are as good as the SCNs for cheaper, I would be willing to try them. Im just kinda nervous because this stuff is way over my head. He has so many different pickups and pickup combos to choose from. I have no idea what kind of sound Im looking for, so I guess I want to stay as close to the classic tele tone as possible. I hope that is what I want at least.
I was hopin someone here has tried some of the Bill Lawrence tele pickups and could give me their opinion. But I might just have to guess on a pair and order them.

I've not tried Bill Lawrences, but I have owned Dimarzios- the non-humcancelling Twang Kings are my current pickups, and are fantastic. I also had a Virtual Vintage Strat pickup which was very good- it had a bright tone which smoothed out really well with a little roll-off on the tone control. It also cut out more hum than the Seymour Duncan single coil sized humbuckers I had in the same guitar- not exactly the right set of opinions for the subject, but the Dimarzios would be worth checking out, in my experience.

I think I will probably go with the Fender SCNs. They can't be bad because they were designed by Bill Lawrence, and they can't be far away from classic single coil, tele tone because they are sold by Fender. Maybe after I learn more about tone, pickups, and the style of music I like to play most, I will sell the SCNs and got some Bill Lawrence pups. I simply don't know enough about tone, pickups, and my style of playing to accurately choose one of the many, many options of Bill Lawrence pickups that are offered.
Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy some Fender SCNs?

Hi... I am working on a tele project and have used an SCN tele neck pickup...it is fantastic and quiet. Just a beautiful sound. I have teamed it with an original fender full range humbucker that I have since found out is worth more than the entire guitar project!!!! These massive mojo equipped pickups are stunning. A huge pickup (I had to make a custom surround) have big wide flat coils and magnetic screw poles. The sound has a real "klaaang" to it, think mid-era rolling stones. It is a HB but even bigger and was designed to give a distinct fender flavour. This it does without imitating other fender styles, definitely a bright pickup... You can't have it! Other pickup I liked are the JB higher output fender "noiseless" strat pickups...the lower powered ones not so good. I believe lawrence did a lot of the work on these and the SCN and his quality most likely on a par. If your tastes move to the humbucking zone, you might consider a rail pickup in the bridge postion to smooth out the tele bite and provide a little more oomph... pete

Hi guys i am new here. But here is my two cents for this problem.I would go with Kinmans, wich are the best I have seen. There is the hope that SURH guitars, are going to make their backplate for the teles too.I have it on my G&L Legacy and it is the best solution for me.No noise and I can use any pickups I want.I tried the Fenders and they are in the trash.Sorry.Never heard the BILL Lawrence.Old BILL sure makes great pups.Used to have one regular blade single coil and sounded good, but noise.
