(moved to The Hock Shop (it's about buying something) by sumgai on 8/9/08)
Hiya
Does anyone know where to get a "no frills" ordinary hard case that will fit a double neck with a STRATOCASTER shaped body? One that doesn't cost 3 arms and a leg that is - and that deals with the UK!
The cheapest I can find is one that Epiphone make for their ES1275 but I don't know if my guitar will fit. Can anyone please tell me the dimensions allowed for the body, how far apart the necks are, the width of the neck spaces and the overall length allowed for the guitar etc? (Is this a shaped case - or is it just a rectangle for the body?)
Much appreciated.
Andy

Why not make one? Excuse me if it sounds like a flippant question, but isn't this board full of people who want to make their own custom things? (like, say, guitars...) I'm sure all the modders aboard would gladly welcome a reference for custom case manufacture... It's a start, ok?

You might have to move it back now, sorry...
It's about building now!

AW- You might try Rondo Music: Douglas Double-neck caseThey give some dimensions in the description. Their site states that they ship "on occasion" to Western Europe, whatever that means. Probably means call them up and ask/beg/cajole them. But the price seemed right.

Hi guys Thanks for the suggestions. As for making a case... wiring/re-wiring a guitar is much easier than woodwork (for me anyway!) The Douglas case looked perfect... but its 3/4 of an inch too narrow. Pity! Keep em coming... Andy

I saw this when you originally posted and checked the site but couldn't find the item I was thinking of, but as you still seem to be on the hunt, Thomann had some a while back for their own Harley Benton Doubleneck. Neither seem to be available anymore, but it may be worth getting in touch with them at www.thomann.de. They are based in Germany, but will post to England, and will still be cheaper than buying here- in fact when the exchange rate was even better I practically got my rack tuner completely free, even with postage, which is free over £100! I have found them to be quite reliable, and good with answering questions, though of course I can't guarantee that they will be able to come up with any left over doubleneck cases. It has to be worth an email or two though...

AW- I find myself wondering how they measure these things- is the padding taken into account or not? I mean, if it's measured from the innermost edges of the padding, then it doesn't take into account the "give" the padding provides. And you only need 3/8" per side of compressing the plush stuff. Even if you find one that doesn't fit exactly, how are your tailoring skills as compared to your woodworking? A razor knife to make a slit, remove a bit of the padding material, needle and thread to sew it up- Presto! You're in business.

Hi y'all It's interesting reading all these comments - you know, I've never been officially welcomed , but I've really been made to feel welcome with all the various replies and comments to my various stupid questions! Sadly, I missed out on the Ebay auction - serves me right for not checking things every day! I'd already chatted to Thomann.de before my original post and they suggested buying a keyboard case and some foam and making a custom case like that. The problem is, their (and most other company's) cases are really thick and/or long. They do offer a custom guitar case service, but its about £150 - £200. Awkward aren't I! I live in Cornwall, South-West England. So, Andrew, what would it cost for you to make one for me, please? The overall dimensions of the guitar are 18.5 x 41 x 2.75 inches. I'll send a tracing if we can agree a price, but I guess the fly in the ointment may be the shipping if you're in the States. All the help is appreciated. Cheers Andy W.

Hiya - me again - and so soon!! I keep coming across members asking for email notifications when posts are added to threads and being told the feature doesn't exist. But.... If you bookmark a thread and go into your profile, there is an option to "manage bookmarks" which allows you to ask for email notifications either on a thread by thread basis or globally! Woohoo!! HTH (as the honoured Sumgai would say) AW

AW,
This is something new for version 4.5 of the ProBoards software...... I think. It wasn't mentioned at all in their blurb to the various Forum Owners, announcing the release of the update, hence my assumption. I don't recall that we could bookmark a particular topic prior to about the middle of February or so of this year..... anyone else have a different recollection?
BTW, Version 5.0 of the software is in the works, and is supposed to get installed sometime prior to Christmas.

lol cool im in australia..... the price to build one depends on how you want it to look but seriously.... you could build one yourself easilly.... its just a box with some foam in it..... the place you buy the foam from will cut it to the shape you need... the casee itself would most likely be made of plywood.... marine ply... the latches and handle are the only hard part.... they come up on ebay every now and then.... or find a smaller case and steal the parts off it.... im making a pedal case at the moment... as well as a tele and a hollow body and trying to troubleshoot 3 effects pedals..... i need my own person guitar tech i think ;D

Hiya
Thanks for the ideas. Sadly my woodwork is not great and trying to cut straight lines long enough would be a problem!!!
Cheers

its not about cutting straight lines.... this is where experience and knowledge comes in what you want to do is when cutting the top and bottom sides... place them ontop of each other... clamp... and make the appropriate cuts.... this way the cuts that meet are the same... doesnt realy matter if it is out by a mm or few.... repeat the process with the opposite sides.... this is how i did it to save time and effort while i was doing my carpentry courses..... never used a rule or a tape measure..... just my eyes and a pencil.... its not rocket science... oh and.... where theres a will theres a way

I agree with that, Sumgai!!! ;D Andrew, how do you make sure all the angles are at 90 degrees to each other? I said my woodwork was rubbish! Cheers Andy

aw, Actually, that's pretty easy, even for a beginner-level woodworker..... so long as you can read a tape-measure with some accuracy. In any rectangle, if all four corners are at exactly 90°, then the two diagonals will measure exactly the same distance. This is how decks and patios are built with square corners. ;D HTH sumgai

!!! All I want is a cheap hard case for a strat shaped 6/12 double neck!!! When I asked about getting the angles right, I was particularly thinking about the sides (with the catches and latches on). I can get the big bits cut by the wood supplier, but the sides are more "interesting". I'm still inclined to think the easiest way is to buy a keyboard case (which will no doubt be a bit big) and fill it with foam cut to shape. Unless, anyone has seen a case (like the one earlier in this thread) that will fit? For reference. the body will fit in a rectangle 19 inches long (+ strap buttons which the foam should take care of) x 18.5 inches wide. The overall dimensions are 40.5 x 18.5 x approx 2.75 inches. Cheers Andy

aw, Yes, but my premise holds, no matter how big or small the rectangle might be. Unless you start going for oddly shaped pieces to make up your case, then every piece you use to assemble a home-brew case will be rectangular, nes't-ce-pas? I merely referred to a deck or patio to prove the point of how accurate the method is. Good plan. sumgai

AW's after the first. The case has already been made by Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Steve Howe and a few others.
I rest my case . . . ;D
