I have a MIM Fender Telecaster with some newly installed SCN pickups. I play through a Gibson Goldtone 15w tube amp. I love how small and light this amp is but the problem with it is that it only has one channel and has no reverb. Once I really crank the amp I get a good crunch sound but I need some good overdrive sound without the extreme volume. I already had to buy an Electro Harmonix Holy Grail Plus reverb pedal to get some reverb, and now I am thinking of getting a good distortion/overdrive pedal. I currently have an Electro Harmonix Metal Muff distortion pedal. The problem with this is that I don't play metal and I just don't really like the sounds that come from it. I was thinking about selling the Metal Muff and getting an Ibanez Tube screamer. I've been looking at the TS-9. It's $100 new, but I think most people get them modded. Heres the link to where I was thinking of maybe ordering a modded TS9. www.buyanalogman.com/Ibanez_TS_9_808_Mods_p/am-ts-9-808-mods.htmWould you recommend this pedal? Would you recommend the modded version? Would the Robert Keeley mod be better? Should I get a 2 channel amp? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Hey JL, this TS-9 reissue, to my ears, filters out out low bass, then thickens the the freq.'s where the tone knob is set with a sort of reverb of its own, which accents the louder notes. I've seen several versions (Ibanez, Maxon) that claim to add some lows back in. True bypass would be nice. Sounds better thru effects loop of my solid state Fender than in front, and was too much on the drive channel.

If you're looking for a low-medium gain overdrive, the tubescreamer is a classic for a reason. The character is very good, with clear grainy mids, and a smooth top end. As gitpiddler says, it does cut the lows, and thicken the mids compared to the bypassed tone.. As for the 'reverb of its own', I'm not quite sure what he's getting at, but it is a very good pedal. If you are looking for other options too, rather than jump straight into another amp, have a look at the Digitech Bad Monkey. Yes, it's got a daft name, but it is analogue, contrary to the brand name, and is (or at least sounds like) a tube screamer, but with bass and treble controls, which make it easier to liken it to the bypassed tone. For a cheap pedal it has a fine, fine, tone, and is the overdrive I use on my board. The action of the pedal switch is not as classy a brand new boss or something, but I often think that if I had saved a couple of hundred pounds for a pedal which sounded like this one, I would still be pleased with it. Otherwise, a Tubescreamer, modded or otherwise, will give you a nice 'amp-like' drive for blues, country, and lower gain rock sounds. Other guitarists will come over and admire it, too.

You might also check the Digitech Hardwire Line. I like there Valve Distortion One. They also have an OD one. They are true bypass. Good Luck

Andy- I plugged my TS-9 straight into the board at the church where I've been gigging the last 25 weeks. I noticed the 'reverb of its own' must have been a product of the Fender Ultrachorus amp I abuse at home, which needs some of the broken and loose in/out jacks repaired. The church has a little Peavey transtube amp which I mike into the board with decent results, but I sure miss that Fender. The TS-9 did OK but I need a monitor amp up there (next to the drum kit) to hear myself and get a wee bit of feedback fun. Cheers and Happy New Year to all the nutz.

Did you buy that Ultra Chorus amp on Craigslist?

I used to have an Ultra Chorus but I sold it on Craigslist about a year ago. I though you were the person who bought it because you live in East Tennessee. I live in Knoxville.

Hey neighbor, PM on the way. A fellow that was working part-time there sold me on that amp, plus ran a TS-9 into it when we were trying it out. I let him later refret the guitar I had there. Musta been the FRED pickup, he started playing some perfect Satch and just made my day. git out
