From another thread in the Electronics and Wiring forums: As for phase, if you've heard it and don't like it, then search on. If you've never heard it, I strongly suggest you give it a try, just for the sake of being informed. Sounds like a good topic to me. Reason being, I went to add an example or two for quick reference, and suddenly realized I was dain bramaged - I couldn't think of a single artist who's sound/tone was centered on two (or three) pups being out of phase. Anyone out there got an artist/group that could serve as a Poster Child for this often-talked-about sound? sumgai

Anyone out there got an artist/group that could serve as a Poster Child for this often-talked-about sound? sumgai Jimmy Page! almost every other song after he had after the famous Jimmy Page mod. Before I understood that he had it modded to include OoP, I kept thinking what the he||'s the problem with his Les Paul. Whole bunch-o-tunes on Houses of the Holy. JH will know specifics. "Tea for One" for sure, and that is a little cleaner so you can hear the OoP warble. I think the "Ocean."

I think BM uses it on some tracks, Bohemian Rhapsody?
Heres another that Im not sure about: The main sound on Led Zep's 'House of the Holy' (Im thinking of the song on Physical Graffitti) is very nicely reproduced by a bridge Hb in series OoP with the neck Sc, with a dollop of crunchy overdrive on top. I dont know how JP actually did it, but this tone is one that would be avalable on the usual JP LP mods.
Thirdly, LP afficionados refer to two humbuckers in parallel OoP as the 'Peter Green' sound. PG was founder member of Fleetwood Mac. theres a few demos of this sound on Youtube, heres a couple that I found:

all the 'stangs kurt used had the phase switches; the jag-stang came around after all the albums (its just a mustang that looks like it was hit by a car anyway) bleach was recorded on univoxes, nevermind on mostly strats, jag and comp mustang. and one strat with a tune-o-matic bridge. in utero was mostly the jaguar wired with a les paul 3 way and superdistortion/PAF. But I think 'rape me' might be close to the out of phase sound, but according to kurtsequipment.com it was just a jag and les paul copy on that album.

Lest we forget Gary Moore? The paul he got from Peter Greene, who should also be mentioned, had the pickups magneticly out of of phase. Does that count?

The thing is, is that there really isn't a single OoP tone. Different pickups will sound radically different when combined OoP, depending on output, position, etc ... One thing is that it opens up a LOT more tonal variety. I like to incorporate it on all of my builds/mods whenever possible.
One thing to note is that PRS uses it on their double humbucker equipped guitars to get "single coil" like sounds.
I built an HSH guitar and used OoP wiring on the middle single coil to get some quacky and twangy sounds. When the middle was combined OoP with the bridge, it got a nice twangy sound, with the brigde, more of a thin "reedy" type sound.
If I'm not mistaken, Santana uses the OoP position on his PRS for the solo on "Smooth".

Chris, I've been leaning towards John's gem of a SSS series/parallel with blender, found here. Next time I have to go in, I'm gonna give this a try. ;D sumgai
