Howdy all, I've got a Tele that I put a bridge-position PAF-style humbucker into. It still has it's original neck single coil and it's original 250k-pots and cap.
I'm wondering if I can add a new 500k volume pot just for the bridge PU (in an effort to brighten the bucker slightly), change the 250k master volume to a neck PU volume, and keep the 250k master tone.
Just wanted to bounce it off y'all to see if anyone knows of a reason why this would be a bad idea before I go put an extra hole into my guitar.
Suggestions are Mucho appreciated! Thanks!

Hi simple, and WELCOME to GN2! Well, I think you will want a 500k tone pot, not a 500k volume pot, for the humbucker - but I would just replace the 250k tone pot with a 500k tone pot and see how that goes first ... however, this is GuitarNuts, so let's see what others have to say about moving you closer to your tone quest. Hang tight and, in the meantime, you could take a look here to see how the extra tone pot might fit in. D2o

On a Tele, isn't this just another hole in the control plate?? This can be done fairly easily once you figure out the physical installation. You could use a concentric pot and avoid any new holes. Or you could drill for a third pot, but I suspect (without having ever measured it) that you're going to have to use the mini-sized pots to get them all to fit the control plate. Which means buying 3 new pots. Which means the choice of pot values is wide open. I'd make both the bridge vol and the master tone 500K pots. This would get the HB brighter and wouldn't have a drastic effect on the SC. But YMMV.

Greetings and welcome. I'm gonna flog this one again, as this is one of the simplest and more versatile things you can do with another hole in your guitar... This one is from Wolf's site. A great resource for ideas and inspiration. 2 Capacitor Tone ControlThis diagram shows a tone control that has a switching option for choosing 2 capacitor values. The switch is a Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT). Suggested values for the capacitors would be .02 and .047 mfd. A flick of the switch and you can change cap values for your single coil or humbucker. One still might want to use a 500K pot tho'.
You can eliminate the mini-toggle switch with a push pull pot for cap selection.
And, if a SPDT Center-OFF switch is used, one can get three cap values, 0.047 for one, 0.022 for the other , and 0.015 (the "woman tone") for the third (series rules) with just two caps.

Of course, GuitarFetish has come to the rescue of all Tele modders by making up blank Tele control plates, so we modders can drill away 'til our hearts are content. This would allow one to put 4 of them thar mini-pots in, with one being a blender to replace the switch. Hmmm . . . .

Fantastic! Thanks for all the good ideas. I'm off to go buy a couple 500k pots (and maybe some additional caps)!
