Hi, just wanted to say that I was here once and have been lurking vaguely for a few years. Just wanted to say that most people who aren't actively posting are probably still hee-ya. Anyways, bought an X-mas project, any ideas/suggestion/insane disturbing procedures for a : double humbucker, jay turser, les-paul style, junior guitar Got it for 100$ so its gonna be extensively remodeled. New tuners are a must as it doesn't stay in tune when pummeled. I was thinking sperzel locking, but if anyone could suggest something similar and cheaper that would be fine, just fine. I got to change those crappy pickups too, was thinking dimarzio cauze i have never tried them, but am again open to all suggestion/rants about crazy good pickups. Wiring wiring wiring, Any Ideas? It seems like there a allot of 2 humbucker shemes out there now, If you want please suggest a mod and tell me why it's better that others/other peoples suggestions . I'll be glad to put pics up if you would like. I think i would rather buy a 100$ guitar and do 300$ of "stuff" to it, than get a 400$ guitar right of the bat. /end lengthly return post /start lengthly discussion (are putting /commands still awesome forum talk? )

HG- Welcome back! They also serve who vaguely lurk. I'll confess to not understanding this in the least. To my way of thinking, a $150 guitar merits a $60 set of pickups, not a $200 set. But hey, that's just me, whatever frosts yer flakes! What you haven't told us is what you dislike about the stock pickups, and what sort of sound you hope to achieve by changing them. Assuming you are talking about keeping to humbuckers for replacements, there are more than several options available. (I'd pull those HBs for a pair of P90s in a heartbeat, but again, that's just me.) As far as tuners go, upgrading the tuners is one place you can truly make a big difference for not much outlay. I don't skimp on tuners, buy good ones. I've not used the Sperzel locking ones so I can't help ypu there.

Hi, thanks for the reply! I can completely understand the reasoning behind getting a better guitar initially, but this is what frosts mah Flayx (I think) : When you buy a crappy guitar, there is more satisfaction to had when you make it better... there is something attractive for me in a completely wonky guitar. Plus, you end up with a unique guitar, something that could inspire you. Is all about making something dysfunctional, awesome. What I said about the prices were an exaggeration (I hope) If project fails----> put parts on other guitars lol. The stock pickups actually aren't all that bad, the bridge is pretty hot (good for what i want), the neck pickup doesn't work. Could just be a loose wire. What I am aiming for is a hot bridge (not overboard) and a mellow neck. Would a p90 be suitable for neck (never heard one, but am open to new things) ? Also has any one ever tried lipstick pickups? Anyways, purchased some nice tuners on ebay (sperzel). I'm going to wait for them to come to set this thing up properly, and see if the pickups absolutely need changing and if this is an appropriate vessel for my next project. I was very eager to get started yesterday While I wait, any suggestions for wiring (assuming i have 2 humbuckers---> with 4 wires each.) -Btw, I realize that this thread is very self-centered and benefits no one but me, so I'm sorry lol.

So, are you asking for folk to come up with everything possible with two humbuckers, or specific recommendations? If it's the former, I'll quietly ignore you, but if it's the latter, clues few might help. Oh, you know, the type of music you play, the body and neck wood, the number of pots and switch in-body. I could suggest several mods which are all better because they're mine ( P-Rail). Breath baited waits he.

Yeah, after lunch at the Sushi Bar, my breath is "baited" as well. ;D ;D
I believe the expression is "bated breath". But back on topic . . .
I agree, and I particularly like it when I can make it better for a little money.
I have a Strat-style guitar with a double-lipstick tube HB from GFS in the bridge position. It has 500K vol and tone pots, with a push/pull on the Vol for series/parallel between the 2 coils (it is a single pickup guitar, very simply wired).
The lipstick tubes are quite bright and jangly with the tone at "10", they mellow nicely as you roll off the tone a bit. They are relatively low output pups, you're not going to be Mr Super-Gain with the tubes.
As far as P90s, if you haven't heard a good P90 in an LP guitar, try one. I can't really describe the P90 sound, it's basically a single coil but with a bit more meat on its bones than a Strat type SC.

Yeah, after lunch at the Sushi Bar, my breath is "baited" as well. ;D ;D I believe the expression is "bated breath". But back on topic . . . Akshully, it's " 'bated breath", note the apostrophe that denotes a contraction. Short for "abated", as in "stopped, withheld, delayed, shunted aside", you get the drift. Of course, with some of those 3S/WH folks, you never can tell, he may well have put something on his breath to act as a bait! For what, we'll have to wait and see..... HTH sumgai

Ill bite
Thing are slowly working out. The pickups will probably both be Gfs.
Probably lipstick neck (mmm delicious lipstick neck... ill bite) and high output power rails for bridge.
Theres a significant difference in the impedance... so am i right in saying that they will not mix well?
anyways : 4 push-pull 500k pots and the standard 3 way switch are going to be used.
Should the pots be audio (logarithmic i assume) for volume and linear for tone? (ebay store said so )
Thinking about jimmy page style wiring : wait... theres like 23 versions.
I think ill stay aways from the p-rails mostly because of the cost, and the of fear of tones unknown. Some brave day. I will try. (don't know much about lipstick either... something more feminin' to lipstick... P-rails what does the P stand for anyways? + there's only one railS.)
The intonation on this guitar is just very very bad. Hope I can work this out somehow or else i will be getting another crappy L-p style guitar.
Never drink and post!

P-90. Yep, only one rail per pickup. Maybe they call it P-Rails 'cuz they want folks to buy them in sets (two rails per set of two). Or, maybe they expect them to be selling like hot cakes (Ya, them P-Rail's be going oot the door in droves, you betcha'). Or, maybe they don't understand the difference since all the other rail pickups had 'em in twos (and, there IS marketing involved). They are somewhat costly. However, I'm of the opinion that the P-Rail is the first humbucker pickup design that is actually meaningful to use with most complex coil splitting/selecting wiring schemes. Disparity is. And, may the tones be known. Select the "videos" link. This is the thread I started on the P-Rail pickup. P-Rails (or not)The only spec that most pickup makers state is the resistance, which is just one component of impedance. It only absolutely tells one the resistance of the coil winding. That being said, a lipstick is a low output voltage pickup and a rails type generally is a high output voltage pickup. They may well not mix well. How are you going to fit a lipstick into the neck humbucker cavity? Is it a dual coil/tube lipstick? The SD JB is a higher output voltage pickup and the SD Jazz is a lower output voltage pickup, but these do mix well. If the guitar has a volume and tone for each pickup, use them! I use audio taper for both.

...short for "Oy vey iz mir," Oh, woe is me! ...btw, I checked out the video...those P-Rails are quite impressive... Now, if I could just convince the wife that I really had three projects going instead of two... Happy Trails Cynical One

Yep.
And you've all heard the one aboot the dyslexic rabbi (Yo)?
One of the things that I got for Christmas was the Seymour Duncan pickup DVD. I've had their 3 CD pickup set for several years and have listened to it often.
